Pendo
received a sixth payment.
"I am twenty-seven years old, living with my parents and my five siblings. I cleared high school and since then I have not had the opportunity to go to college. My parents are not well off and most times they depend on my big brother who is a mechanic for the family's upkeep. Before the transfer we were living in poverty, my brothers' money was not enough and most days we would take one meal a day. This devasted my parents. they are old and could not do anything. Receiving this money has enabled me to start a project of rearing chickens, for the last three months I have been buying chicks at $5, for now, I have seven and hopefully in six months, they would be many and eventually sell them for double the price I bought and help out with the family needs."

Rachel
received a $28 tenth payment.
"I currently sell chicken and so far I am left with 20 chickens but unfortunately my chicken selling business is not really doing well. So I am planning to leave that business and start a new one that will earn me enough money to better my life and my families life.I want to save enough to open a new kiosk where I will be able to sell wheat and oil. I do not want to start my business at my village because there are not enough people there to support my business. To enable me make a sizable profit, I will create a space and offer them to my neighboring villages. Thank you GiveDirectly for making me believe good things can come"

Kachana
received a sixth payment.
"I purposely sent out to try and invest in chicken farming as soon as I had the ability to withdraw the transactions since I wanted it to help me financially in the future. So I went ahead and spent KES 1,500 on five hens. I was left with a balance of KES 1,900 which I immediately planned to spend on nutrition since I had to take care of myself after my husband passed away and nourishment was a daily issue for me. I bought five packets of maize flour, one kg of sugar, two kg of green grams along with sardines and everyday supplies using that money."

Kanze
received a $28 sixth payment.
"The greatest hardship in my household is hunger. The charcoal-making practice that I rely on to raise money for food hardly puts meals on the table daily. Sometimes, my son who hawks water in Mombasa sends money home for household needs, which can barely feed his wife, six children, and me for more than a day. The transfers from Give Directly come as a relief that allows me to contribute to most of the family’s needs. I spent $19 from the recent transfer on food as the household had run out of maize flour that morning. I bought two chickens worth $6 and paid $9 worth of school fees for my grandchild when she was sent out of class to collect the balance. In December, I spent $20 on iron sheets and $14 on building poles, which I plan on using to extend an extra room from my house. From the money I received in November, I spent $10 on a guineafowl for rearing and the rest on food. "

Dama
received a $28 sixth payment.
"I wish to purely raise livestock as a source of income. These will help me raise funds in the future to support the needs of my family without having to rely on my son. I would be happy if by the end of the year, I would have bought 10 more chickens and four more goats to expand my herd. I trust future cash transfers to help me accomplish this goal. "

"In the next one year and beyond, I am planning to start livestock rearing project., I want to ensure that I buy goats and chicken and after a period of time, I would be in a position to sell them and pay school fees for my children without any difficulties. With the plans in mind, I will be ensuring that I buy one at a time with the transfers that I will be receiving monthly."

Safari
received a sixth payment.
"I have always desired to be in a position to rear livestock and have my own business, but due to to financial difficulties, I had never been privileged to do so, so in the near future, I plans to buy livestock(goats) and chicken so that I could rear them at home and be able to sell whenever I would be in need of finances. I also want to start a green groceries business, and with the business proceeds, I would be in a position to cater for my needs with ease. I will ensure that I subject my monthly transfers to buying one item at a time so that after a certain period of time, I would have everything in place."

Mercylyne
received a $28 second payment.
"As I mentioned earlier I cleared high school which means I can now pursue college education. I want to at least get into a computer college but with my current finances it feels next to impossible. I have created a plan that includes increasing the number of the chicken I own and then eventually selling them at a profit so I can be able to afford school fees. I want to at least get two hens per month but this will be determined by market price. I want to buy chicken from big chicken farmers which ensures I get them at affordable prices but also during a period when they are not so much in demand than I get a good value for my money."
