"Receiving this money will bring a major paradigm shift to my life. This money could not have come at a better time than this, I intend to use the first tranche of the transfer to buy foodstuff. Food insecurity is so biting, we hardly have food to eat and mostly we survive on just a meal a day, or other times we go to bed hungry. I will use the second transfer to expand my house which is small to accommodate me and my grandchildren, this will cost approximately $200, and use the rest of the money to purchase a water tank to harvest water when it rains since I cannot travel long distances to search for water because of my health situation."

"Since I do not have a formal job, I have relied on crop farming and livestock keeping. I spent $5 on watermelon seeds immediately after receiving my recent transfer, hoping that they would grow well and allow me to venture into Agri-business. They are not doing well owing to the drought, which is affecting our crops. In addition, I spent the rest of the transfer, $29 on plowing an acre parcel of land that had been bare for the previous five years. I hired a tractor to help with the plowing. It would have been difficult for me to succeed in preparing that parcel of land for farming without the transfer."

"My new goal is to invest in livestock specifically goats. I chose goats over cows because goats can survive without water for a longer time compared to cows. Through this investment, I will be able to cater to my children's education as well as their basic needs."

"I started a business of tailoring five years ago. The business only does well during the festive season. On normal day, I get $3. This money is not enough to cater to my family's needs. I only buy food as my husband supports the rest of the bills such as school fees for my two children and pays for water. The drought season has been challenging and food has been expensive most days my family only take one meal a day to survive the day. Receiving this transfer has helped me buy two new machines that will help me increase my productivity at a faster rate, Install electricity at my compound, and buy a goat that would be providing milk for my family."

"I spent $100 of my first transfer to renovate my house by constructing new walls. This is because it was collapsing from the inside something that made me live worried life that it might fall while inside with my 2 grandchildren. Currently, I am happy that I live in a decent house courtesy of the transfers. Additionally, I spent $100 to start a small grocery business for my daughter-in-law who is jobless. This will help her own a reliable source of income that will support her family as well as cater for the educational needs of the grandchildren. Furthermore, I bought a water barrel so as to store enough water for myself and a table since we use to place cooked food on the floor while eating and most of the time it was contaminated with sand. Lastly, I intend to spend part of the remaining amount to support the education of my grandson who is in grade 5 once the school reopens. With the other amount, I will buy 3 goats to start livestock keeping a future investment for myself."

"By early next year, I will be happy if I would have repaired the roof of my house. It has rusted over the last ten years, and the perforations let in water whenever it rains, hence dampening my bedding. Am grateful for the last few cash transfers as they have allowed my husband and I to acquire 11 pieces of iron sheets to date. I plan to use half of every cash transfer to complete this exercise and direct the remaining half toward the education of my son in form four. I would be equally grateful if he studied through the remaining months of his high school education without being sent home for school fees."

"Earlier on after receiving our first transfer, we bought a water tank. It needed a safe place to be installed thus with the second transfer we bought gutters and cement that we could use to build a strong foundation where it would sit. The total cost of purchasing the needed materials plus paying the plumber was $300. From the remaining amount, I deposited $200 into my children’s school fees account, since they had arrears. For the rest $30 I bought foodstuff to feed my family for a while."

"I am a mother to six children, but only one is schooling at the moment. Her studies had been cut short because of fees arrears which had accumulated to $200. I was able to have it cleared after receiving the second transfer. Getting water from the river has been a struggle since it’s far away from where we stay and also costly. To curb this issue, we agreed with my husband to install tap water at home. Getting all the materials and a plumber to do the job we spent #200. Since I am a farmer, this has come in handy since I can now grow vegetables for both home use and sell the surplus to earn income. My husband who is a primary school teacher has been sorting the major bills as I take care of the minor ones. For the remaining amount of $130, I bought a few pieces of furniture for the house and food that would last us a couple of weeks."

"Fetching enough water every day from the river which is far away from our village has been so hard. This had been my responsibility all through as my husband is quite busy during the day and my one child is always in school until late in the evening. Ensuring that I avail enough water to enhance our cleanliness and also for home use has been a struggle. Buying water was quite costly as they would sell five jerricans for $30. Upon receiving the second transfer, we agreed with my husband to install tap water in our home. Buying all the materials needed and having it fixed cost us $500. We have two separate shops, one selling foodstuffs and the other one selling clothes and household stuff. In one of the shops, we do Mpesa services. I would say that the income we get from both shops has enabled us to educate our children comfortably and also to cater to other basic needs of the family. For the remaining amount of $50, I obtained foodstuff for my household."
