"I spent KES 20,000 to clear all the fee arrears for my son who is in form 3. This is because his education was constantly disrupted due to the huge fee balance something that bothered my heart. Currently, I am happy that he is learning without interruption. Similarly, I used KES 5,500 to clear the fees for the 3 kids who primary school and bought school uniforms for them since they were old and worn out uniforms. In addition, I bought solar panels on hire purchase where I paid KES 5000 and I intend to pay the others in 12 monthly installments. With the remaining amount, I bought 4 chickens for KES 2000 to boost my poultry farming a reliable source of income that will support the education of my kids in the future."

"I am just starting up a family with two young children who have not joined school yet. I depend on my spouse who is a shopkeeper but as time goes he might be overwhelmed with family responsibilities. I have therefore saved KES 5000 in monthly rotational and savings groups intending to start a retail shop so that we both have a source of income. I am hopeful that after one and a half years I will have raised enough capital. KES 2000 I spent on 5 packets of cornflour for the family, bought two chickens at KES for rearing, and still have KES 1000 for daily use."

"For a couple of years, I have been hired by someone as a caretaker within our village to help support in looking after his livestock. From him, I have learned valuable skills of doing poultry farming which I consider a profitable business. Therefore, when I received my most recent transfer, I decided to spend KES 2,000 on buying 5 chickens. I aim to raise them and later sell them to boost my level of financial income. Through this venture, I am optimistic to begin raising other livestock; goats and sheep, which are a form of live asset and a great help in the hour of urgent need. Therefore, supporting myself as well as my siblings will no longer be as burdensome to my mother as it had been in the past years."

"I am a trained teacher but up to now, I have not secured a job. I have been on short contracts which could not sustain me. I used my savings to start two projects which so far have been my source of income. I am operating a shop and also a poultry project as I search for a job. My desire was to grow my business and also expand my poultry project. Receiving the transfer offered a huge boost to these projects. I invested Ksh. 23000 on restocking my shop with different kinds of products. I am expecting a huge profit margin out of this. Having restocked my shop, I spent the remaining amount on improving the Chicken house and bought more birds to keep and rear them. I can readily look for a market to sell the chickens like hotels once they increase in number. This will ensure a cash flow also alongside the shop business."

"After I graduated from high school last year, my ambition was to start raising chickens. The plan is to let them multiply and then sell them to raise funds to build my one-room house. I wish to move out of my brother's house (who lives in Mombasa town) so he can have privacy whenever he visits and so that I can have my own space. This is why I used KES 600 from the transfer to purchase two hens and begin my rearing journey. I spent the rest of the money on food. For the previous three days, our household had gone without food, causing us to sleep hungry. I am truly grateful because we have never gone to bed hungry since."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the cash transfer, I was able to start poultry farming. This has been my dream for so many years since I am old and jobless, this is the only investment that I thought would make me not struggle like before. I did some research and realised that the layers( chicken) can do well in my region and they are in high demand. Currently, 30% of them have started laying eggs which makes me trust that I will start earning very soon. At least I will no longer have to depend on my grandchildren for the daily meals and all the basic needs."

"My second transfers which I received, I spent KES 25000 on buying a young bull which I intend to rear and resell when it matures so that I can raise money for buying land. I then spent KES 11500 on buying three bags of maize for consumption. We had none in stock and we thank God for GiveDirectly who came to our lives when we had none. I also spent KES 2500 on buying chickens for rearing. These chickens when they start laying eggs they will help me on meeting my daily expenditure. The remaining amount, I spent on buying clothes for all my family members. We are glad that we got new clothes which we couldn't afford."
