"I have several capital-intensive projects running this year. I want to start a chicken-rearing business and build my house too. My brother-in-law gave my husband the house we live in now when we got married since my husband did not have a house. It is a one-room house and as our family is growing we would like to have more space. This has however been impossible since my husband is our sole breadwinner, his siblings depend on him for school fees and he also needs to take care of us and this does not allow for making big savings for big projects. So when I got enrolled in GD and started receiving GD transfers I decided to contribute to this. I am saving $20 monthly and so far I have $150 which I hope to use for the house. I am also setting up a structure for chicken since I want to start rearing layers chicken for the eggs. I want to sells eggs to try get some income as a result."

"As I mentioned earlier I am a motorcycle rider. It has been my source of income for many years but the recent years business has plummeted. I do not make as much as I used before and this has affected my family. However, through GD transfers, I began a business selling chicken which has proven to be much more profitable than my motorcycle business. I would like to expand my business beyond its current capacity. This is something I am planning on working on this year. I want to become a big chicken farmer and through it provide for my family."

"As I had mentioned earlier selling chicken is my business, I have a local hatchery from where I get the chicken and rear them to adulthood then I resell them for a profit. This was not what I had intended to do with the money I had intended to start a general shop but the expenses seemed to be above me. I have now focused on the chicken business and my hope this year is to scale. I want to be able to rear other animals as well. I believe through this chicken I can get goats which I can sell and get cows that will in turn bring a large turnaround that will go into cash I can use to make purchases such as land purchases."

"I have been able to sort out several needs that I would be previously unable to sort. My children's mattress was so old and torn I was able to replace it in march, I was also able to pay school fees and buy a goat and now I have three goats courtesy of GD transfer. I want to add more animals, to specific chickens for commercial purposes. That means I need to invest in building a chicken coup before and this is my first project for this year and then later buy the chicken. I also want to add a room to my house, which means buying roofing sheets, about 10 to ensure I have a room enough for my family."

"My household had run out of food when I received the funds. At the time, my charcoal business had not brought me enough money. Also, my husband, who works as a herdsman, had not received his monthly wage yet. Consequently, I spent $10 to purchase maize flour, which gratefully fed my family the rest of the week. I used the remaining amount to buy a goat worth $22 and a chicken worth $2. I hope that these animals will reproduce, as I could sell them in the future to generate money and support the needs of my three children. Likewise, I can trade some of the goats for dairy animals, whose milk I can sell. "

"After getting my first transfer, I spent $9 on two ducks. I've always wanted to raise animals and make a living off of them. I own a sizable farm, but the harsh weather prevents me from working there. By purchasing poultry, I will be able to start my own poultry business and make a living. In addition to purchasing chicken, I also spent $3.4 on my two grandchildren's school expenses. My grandchildren had been sent home because of unpaid school fees a week before I withdrew my transfers. I offered to pay so that they could return and finish their education because their parents didn't have any money. Last but not least, I spent the last $1.60 on a 1 kg packet of maize flour and a 1/4 kg bag of sugar for my own use. I'm appreciative that the money did help me at a time when I had no money to solve some of my problems."

"Due to the drought, it's really difficult puting food on the table. Last year I planted some millet and due to no rains I harvested nothing. This has led to the food instability we're experiencing now. To get food I was forced to sell all my chicken and some some goats. We had no other choice due to hunger. This has been the biggest challenge facing us. It's sad not being able to eat and worrying everyday about food. To also survive I've been depending on my children."

"My plan is to sell some chickens once they have fully grown so that I can generate a profit, which I will then use to open a chemist. Living in a community that is far from the hospital, I believe that opening a chemist will provide a valuable service and help people access the medication they need more easily. With the support of my family members, I am determined to make a positive impact in my community and pursue my ambitions of giving back to my society."

"I am a mother of seven children, four of them are in primary school and one is currently in secondary school. I really thank GiveDirectly for the monthly transfers because life is difficult and even affording a proper meal is becoming so impossible. I am currently taking care of my four chicken so that they can grow big and I sell them and make huge profit. With the recent transfers, I spent $10 to stock food at home so that it can feed us for some weeks. I spent $ 10 on buying three chicken that I added to the one I had that is at home and the remaining amount of $14 I was able to pay for my four children who are in primary and one in secondary school their fees.I am committed to doing everything I can to ensure my children have a bright future. I believe with education they can open doors that will lead them to greater heights and they will not forget all my sacrifices, and they will come back and help me when I am old."
