Ngetich
received a $461 second payment.
"I used KES 40000 to pay back a loan that I had taken to buy a piece of land before. The remaining amount of KES 15000 was used to buy a heifer that will also be helpful to us as a family once it starts producing milk. Had I not received money from GiveDirectly then I would have to rely on proceeds from my motorcycle business to make income and pay the loan in bits. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling me realize this dream much earlier than I had expected."

Ismael
received a $10 initial payment.
"Before I started receiving these funds, there were days when I would have needs to meet but due to the limitation of funds, I would put on hold some of those needs and only focus on the most important ones. For instance, when I need to buy clothes and food, I will focus on purchasing food instead. Now that I have these funds, I will boost my finances after I start the poultry farming business. This will give me the means to start a saving routine towards purchasing a motorcycle of my own. Where one sells at KES 120000. I hope I will fulfill this in one year. Therefore, there is a great difference in my life now that I am receiving these funds, I am more hopeful and determined that I will meet my goals."

Jumaa
received a $10 initial payment.
"Two days preceding the day transfers were sent, by bad lack I got involved in a road accident as I was riding my motorcycle. When I received my transfer, I spent the whole of it on my medication. Despite the fact that I am still experiencing some pain, as a result of the transfer, I have been able to register some improvement in my life. Without the transfer, I would have not been able to buy medicine since I did not have any amount of money saved for such an emergency need."

"I own a loaned motorbike which I normally pay KES 360. Currently there is fuel shortage all over the country and It has forced me to abandon my motorbike taxi service. This means that I have to look for other means to get the mandatory KES 360 daily loan repayment amount. For sure I am worried if the fuel shortage will cease."

"I currently do not have a good house at all. It's more of a temporary structure with mud walls and floors. I'm always worried whenever a rainy season is approaching like right now because of the horrendous experience I have had before. Just imagine external walls collapsing in the middle of the night during heavy rains and because of that you can't even seek shelter elsewhere! When I get this money I'll get a fully habitable shelter for my family of three; myself, my husband and my daughter. We've always meant to do this but he hasn't been able to raise the amount of money needed from his motorcycle taxi job while on the other hand I'm also a housewife. I will be very happy when I manage to put up a decent semipermanent structure that can accommodate my whole family. This will cost a little more than 100000 KES. And should I remain with some more money, I'd also like to build a pit latrine so that my family can desist from using the surrounding bushes."

Mwenda
received a $10 initial payment.
"I am a homestay mum because I do not have a job. I fully depend on my husband who works as a motorcycle rider. Due to the shortage and high prices of fuel, my husband has been unable to work for the past two weeks. Because of this, he has been struggling to meet our daily needs (food). I decided to sell a goat to get money and buy food for the family (wife and 1 child) but I was not successful. Together with my family, we slept hungry for most of the days. Upon receiving my transfer, I bought 12 packets of maize flour and some 2 Kg of sugar. The food I bought eased the tough situation I was in and I am happy that we had something to eat."

"The unstable source of income is the major challenge that I am currently facing. I rely on my motorcycle taxi for money to buy food but of late, the income that I get is not sufficient due to the rising cost of commodities."
