"The biggest difference in my daily life is that with my husband working as motorcycle rider it has been challenging to have food on the table.I am not able to work because am still breastfeeding and my children are very young. The funds have created a big impact when it comes to food insecurity. My goal is to use the funds to balance all my needs on monthly basis.Currently I have a plan of building a new house because my old house is smaller (one roomed) and the roof has been leaking I would like to have atleast a two roomed house and keep some livestock. On monthly basis I plan to invest on building materials, food and livestock untill am ready to start my building which I will mainly focus on once am financially stable."

Thomas
received a $26 second payment.
"Towards the end of last year, we experienced an intense drought, hence our livestock could hardly get feed and water. As soon as the dry spell began, I decided to sell 15 out of the 20 cows I had at a lower price than the prevailing market price. Income from cattle sales helped me to acquire a new motorcycle which I bought on credit. By the end of March 2022, I had an outstanding debt of KES 10,000. When I received the transfer, I spent KES 2000 on paying part of that debt. I am glad that from the bodaboda business, I have been able to generate up to KES 500 per day. Thus I nowadays find it easy to support my family in buying food, clothes and paying school fees for my children."

"In 2020, I did a certificate course in tailoring. It has been my dream to start my own shop whereby I will be making clothes of different kind as well as selling clothing materials. This is much motivated by the fact that my husband's income has never been enough for us here. Motorcycle riding is something you can not 100% depend on as a wife because sometimes he goes the whole day and walk out with 250KES. It can not sustain even himself. So by opening this business, am quite sure we will be earning extra money that will be sustainable to our needs. With a capital investment of 50000KES, I will be good to go. The rest of my transfer will be used to increase and improve my house so that it can be enough for me and my guests."

"I have been admiring to own a small shop where I will selling food staffs. This is because my husband is a motorcycle rider and he earns very little money that can not sustain our needs. I have done my analysis and I have seen a gap that when I open that shop, there is going to be a benefit. Therefore, I intend to use half of my transfer to start that business and will manage to help my husband pay our bills."

"Persistent drought in our village has remained to be the major problem facing my family. My parents did not afford to educate me and the only thing they taught us is subsistence farming. I have been depending on maize farming to put food on the table but due to climate change, agricultural production has been very difficult. I am now depending on casual jobs. Currently I work as a motorist and the much I earn in a single day is KES 300. This is because the scarcity of fuel in the country has destabilized the economy and prices of common commodities have gone very high. Consequently, passengers have resolved to walking than boarding a motorbike. I intend to fix this by using the cash transfers(KES 40000) from givedirectly to buy ten goats which I will keep and sell in the market when they multiply to earn a living."

"Currently we are facing hard time, as a result of drought, it has not rained for better part of last year. We cannot do farming, and the cows have nothing to feed on.
We purely depend on cattle for survival, because we sell milk, on a daily basis but now we are forced not to milk them because, nothing comes out of them."
