"Receiving this money means a decent house for my family. Currently, I am residing in a one-roomed house with my family of 4. This house is very small to accommodate us and it creates unfavorable living conditions for my family. I will use KES 60000 to build a spacious two-bedroom house with an iron sheet roof that will accommodate my family comfortably. I will further spend KES 30000 to start a grocery shop that my wife will operate to have an extra source of income. This is because I am the only breadwinner of the family while my spouse is just a housewife. This has not been giving a peace of mind since the little amount of KES 300 per day from the motorcycle job is not enough to cater to all our needs. By operating the grocery shop I will be assured of getting a profit of KES 300 per day that will cater to other household needs."

"I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I learnt that I had received the money late in the evening since my phone was left charging for the better part of the day. I felt so happy that a promise that we had been told was finally fulfilled. I informed my wife who was equally very happy and told me to go looking for the motorcycle that we had agreed we would buy."

"There has been a great difference in my life ever since I started receiving funds from give directly. In that, I now have a shop (mini supermarket) that adds to the income I get as a motorcyclist. Since I cannot operate both of them, I left my wife to be in charge of it, and on a daily basis, she makes a profit of KES 1000. As for my motorcycling business, on a good day, I get to take home KES 800. Other than this, I was also able to settle my son's school fee arrears and his termly fee. I am now not worried as I used to be about paying the bills."

"The receipt of the transfer meant fulfilling the desires are had to progress my wife academically. I used it to pay her college fee as she is taking a hairdressing course. I then started building a new spacious house that will accommodate us (my wife, my child, and I). Unlike my current home, in the new structure, my son will have his room. This has been the limitation we have had where we not only share a room with him but also a bed. Finally, I opened a shop which I currently operate to generate more income for us."

"I was busy cutting trees so I could start manufacturing charcoal when I got a message confirming that I had received funds from give directly. I immediately called my husband who works in a different town to inform him of the good news. He was very excited as I was and advised me to wait until he returned home so we could plan together the best way to use the funds. I did so and a week later he was home, so, we decided to buy a motorcycle 4 easy locomotion like taking the children to school and going to fetch water."

"I have two children one in grade school and the other in preschool. They're currently performing well and it would be my greatest joy be able to give them quality education. My husband is a motorcycle taxi rider in Mombasa town for now earning unspecified amount but he normally manages to send 800 KES to me weekly. I strongly feel this future isn't certain at all. Getting this money will give me a chance to invest in my children's education alongside furthering my own. I would like to buy some livestock to start raring so that when time comes I can resell to pay their school fees. Personally I dropped out of a village polytechnic when my husband couldn't afford it anymore. With the remainder of the money, I would love to continue so that I can get out of charcoal burning or depending fully on my husband."

"I was married here five months ago as a second wife to my husband who is a motorcycle taxi rider earning around 13000 KES monthly. I'm not yet economically involved as I was previously a polytechnic student taking tailoring. I still do not have much bills to pay because I am just yet to deliver my first baby, meaning my family is still very small. But in the village the only economic activity is charcoal burning and selling which I would not wish to involve in because of the physical nature of the job and the low returns that surrounds it. It will be such a big pleasure if I could put my learnt skills into good use here to be able to earn a living that way. Therefore I plan to buy a sewing machine so that I can start a tailoring business."

"It was very early in the morning that day when we had just woken up as a family. We did not expect to receive the money that day and to me it was a pleasant surprise. I took time to inform my husband of the same and he was equally so much overjoyed. I informed him to go and withdraw the money as we agreed on the things that we needed to do in order to benefit from it."

"It was 7 am and I was in the kitchen preparing breakfast for my family when I thought of checking my phone to see if I had any missed calls or new messages. I went to get it from the main house. I saw that I had a new message and I opened it to check the contents. I was surprised when I found out that it was an SMS indicating that we had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly just as they had promised. I immediately informed my husband of the good news and he was so happy on hearing it. We gave thanks to God since we were now going to be able to fulfill the plans that we had already laid down. We then prepared ourselves and we, later on, went to withdraw the money."

"We spent KES 17000 of the recent transfer on buying a sewing machine. We bought it because I have trained in tailoring and I have a plan to start a tailoring shop of my own once I complete my studies. I am casually employed by someone at her tailoring shop. The money that she pays me at the end of the month has been helping me in paying for my tuition fees in college since I am still training. I am expecting to complete my training this coming December. We also spent KES 15000 on buying a calf. We bought the calf so that it can help us in the future when it calves in providing us with milk that we can consume and sell some. With the remaining transfer amount, we spent it on buying 26 iron sheets. We have a plan to build another house since we only have one house. We were not able to do so before although it has always been our wish since we didn't have the large sum of money that is needed to do so. My husband is casually employed as a motorcycle taxi rider. The money that he gets from his work is not much, it is only enough to buy food and some essential household items. We are thus grateful to GiveDirectly for coming up with this program of helping the less fortunate to our village."
