"Receiving the transfers means so much to me and my family since it will surely transform our lives. For the first transfers we have planned to purchase food since it's the most pressing need. We plan to purchase a bag of maize and 30 kgs of beans and other foodstuffs. This will cost us about $150 for the first transfers. For the remaining amount, we plan to purchase other basic needs such as cooking fat and sugar. When we receive the second and third transfers we have planned to build a kitchen and a toilet. These are two structures that we have desired to have for a long time but because of a lack of finances, we've not been able to build them. We plan to use $500 of the transfers to make this a success. For the remaining transfers, we plan to fence our small compound and purchase a cow. Fencing our compound will enable us to plant trees such as pawpaws and mangoes since it will protect them from livestock. The cow I will purchase will help so much since at the moment I'm forced to spend 7 dollars each day to buy milk. Once I purchase my cow I will not buy milk but will have some to use and also sell to my neighbors. Receiving these transfers will have a positive impact on my life and I'm looking forward to receiving them."

"I think GiveDirectly is doing more than good. I never got any assistance that gives the freedom to buy the missing needs, for example, bed, home materials, cow, build house. This is something to appreciate. I don't see what is not being done well at GiveDirectly. The fact of helping people to get out of poverty comfort is very important. Givedirectly shall continue to do so."

"It is everyone's prayer to reap well from what he or she sows. Since my family of seven depends on the maize farming on the 1 acre of land I own, I am certain the produce is insufficient to cater for all the family's needs. Therefore, I hope to add another 1 acre piece to sow maize, cow peas, and beans so as to produce food for the household besides the $5 we earn daily from the motorcycle taxi business. We hope to use the income from the motorcycle taxi business as well as the maize sales to make this a success."

received a $145 initial payment.
"On that day, I was occupied with my daily duties of herding cows and I had left my phone at home to charge. It wasn't until around 5:00pm that I returned to the house. As soon as I entered, my excitement led me to check my phone to see if I had missed any calls or messages. I was so delighted on discovering an Mpesa SMS notification indicating that I had received a transfer from GiveDirectly. The news filled me with immense joy, prompting me to quickly call my spouse and share the wonderful news with him."

"My goal is to obtain a cow that will serve as a foundation for growing my herd and building my wealth. As the cow reproduces, the herd will expand, providing me with a sustainable source of income. This will ultimately enable me to fund my long-term dream of constructing a better house. I want to construct a house with brick walls and a sturdy tin roof, offering improved living conditions compared to my current mud-walled dwelling, which is prone to destruction by rainwater."

received a tenth payment.
"Initially, I intended to utilize the cash transfers to acquire two cows and an ox plow to assist me in plowing tasks and also hire them out for the same practices to generate an income. Through previous months’ transfers and contributions from my children, I am pleased to have successfully bought one cow and the necessary equipment. However, acquiring the second cow has proven challenging due to financial constraints. It is crucial to have two cows for effective plowing, as a single cow cannot handle the task alone. Despite this setback, I am grateful that the cash transfers have supported me during the ongoing planting season, particularly in terms of weeding and providing food for my family. Over the past three months, I have been allocating $26 from each cash transfer towards purchasing food, while the remainder is dedicated to supporting weeding activities on my farm. This has ensured that my household never misses important meals. Also, through weeding, our crops will grow in a clean environment. We hope to have a fruitful harvest this season, enabling me to spend the funds on other ventures."

Kitsao
received a fourteenth payment.
"My aim for the next few years is to purchase at least four cows. These cows will serve multiple purposes, such as assisting with plowing exercises on our farm and potentially being hired out to others for additional income. I also aim to expand my business further, focusing on buying and selling chickens. I have six children, five of whom are currently attending school. Unfortunately, one of my children has been unable to join secondary school for the past two years due to financial constraints. By growing the business, I hope to earn more and be able to enroll my son in high school, as I support his siblings. "
