Aisha
received a $12 initial payment.
"I currently want to save enough to be able to join college and go study water supply. My community people are really going through a lot because of the prolonged drought and lack of enough water. The moment I received my transfers, I spent $10 on saving for my upcoming project of starting my own kiosk and the remaining amount of $4 I was able to go buy soap, oil and sugar so that it can sustain myself for that period of time."

Kazungu
received a $27 sixth payment.
"My current house is almost collapsing and leaks in water whenever it rains. Am afraid that it may collapse from strong winds and harm my family. Such an accident already happened to my mother after she was injured when her house crumbled on her. I fear the same case may happen to my children unless I build a more stable one. My prayer is to have a two-room house made of mud walls and iron sheets roof by the end of this year. "

Furaha
received a $27 sixth payment.
"I live by the path of water as it comes downhill which means that when its raining water passes through my house and has been washing it away slowly over the years. Now my house is a shell, it is almost crumbling, it is also small hence is not sufficient for my family. I want t build my family a house. I want to by building materials over the year using this money. I will buy some more Iron sheets and poles until they are sufficient to build a house. I also want to venture into livestock farming. This is a very profitable business that can help me take care of my family as currently my income is not sufficient to do so."

Changawa
received a $27 fourteenth payment.
"Due to my current situation, my wife currently provides for our family financially. I had surgery because of a hernia ailment I had that weakened my joints and made me sleep almost the whole day. The only thing that gives me hope is the monthly transfers that I normally receive and the fact that God is always there to provide for all my needs. The moment I received my transfers, I decided to buy food for my family using $12 and water at $3 in order to relieve my wife of some burden. The remaining amount of $19 I took and paid my children's school fees. It really made my children happy and proud to be in school and study just like their mates are."

Kadzo
received a $27 sixth payment.
"As the family’s breadwinner, my husband makes and sells chewing sticks for a living, where his earnings are too low to cover the family’s necessities. To support him, I usually make charcoal to raise school fees for our six children. This still does not hold much water as my children sometimes miss school and we occasionally sleep hungry due to lack of money. Luckily, not only do the transfers enable me to meet some needs, but they also allow me to invest in livestock keeping. In December, I used $7 and $27 to buy three chickens and food respectively. From January’s transfer, I spent $25 to secure a goat, $3 on my son’s school fee, and $6 on food. Recently, I bought a wooden bed worth $30 since my sisal-twined bed was broken, paid my daughter's school fees of $2, and spent the remaining $2 on food. Thanks to Give Directly, I now have a decent bed to sleep on, livestock to generate money from, food on the table, and my children rarely miss classes. I could never be more grateful. "

Furaha
received a $27 fourteenth payment.
"I am a mother of six children who sells fish for a living. I really work hard to make ends meet but on a bad day, I go home empty handed after a very long day of work. In good days, I make $3 a day which is not enough to even sustain my family. I have children who are in school busy chasing their dreams and I pray to God each day for them to complete their studies and be successful in life. The moment I received my transfers, the first thing that came to my mind was how to settle my children's school fees. I took $15 to settle their school fees and it released some burden of my shoulder. After settling their fees, I started thinking of what they will eat after coming back from school, so I took $10 and bought food.Since all boreholes are dried up because of the prolonged drought, we usually go fetch water miles away so I decided to pay a motorcyclist to get six jerry can at $3 in order for us to quench our thirst. The remaining amount of $5 I invested in buying two chickens that I am really praying they hatch and the chicks grow for me to sell."

Kabao
received a $27 tenth payment.
"I received my transfers at a time when I was in dire need of food, with the ongoing drought it had been difficult for us to do farming and therefore getting food had been a challenge and there had also been a scarcity in the water supply. Receiving the transfers had been a great relief to me; I bought food and water worth KES. 2970 and spent the remaining amount of KES. 500 on paying my child’s school fees who was almost being sent home for school fees. I was very grateful for the support at this time of need."

"My greatest challenge is poverty, I want to educate my children to school so that they can study and have a brighter future but an stuck with the challenge of school fees.My children are kkq just home because of poverty. The nature of he soil is poor thus crops are easily washed away by water especially when it's raining so one has to depend on buying food."

Sarah
received a second payment.
"I bought two bundles of zinc to add to the first materials for my house project. I also used 4,000LD from my second transfer to purchase nails for the house project. I am building a new house because the thatch (parpo) does not last before it starts leaking. Getting new thatch from the swamp is a tedious process and it frustrates me. Whenever it rains, water falls in my house like there's no roof. There are many holes on my floor in the house from the drops of water. This is embarrassing for me and getting a new house was my first priority when GiveDirectly brought this help for us. I now have joy in my heart knowing that my condition is about to change."

Mary
received a $27 tenth payment.
"Over the years, I intended to replace the roof of my house but lack of finances hindered me. The iron sheets corroded over time and developed perforations that let in water whenever it rains, thus dampening the space. Thanks to Give Directly, there is potential to renovate the roof through cash transfers. First, I plan to start buying the iron sheets until I assemble at least 24 pieces then hire someone to complete the project later. Regardless of the financial obligations like food and school fees, I hope to be able to save towards this goal"
