"My first transfer I spent on buying three cows. I bought two bulls to plough on my farm and one cow to provide milk for my family. Initially, I was using my hands to till and was very cumbersome. I used a lot of energy and it took a lot of days preparing for my farm. The bulls will ease my work on the farm and I will be able to increase my produce. I will also be able to provide milk for my family and the remaining balance I have from the transfer, I will spend on buying goats as well as paying school fees for my children."

"I spent part of my transfer to purchase some iron sheets and other building materials to expand my house and to increase the number of rooms from two to four since it was not spacious enough and some of my children had to seek shelter from friends. I achieved this through the transfer and now I can comfortably accommodate my family and even visitors. In addition to this, I also bought materials enough to build a toilet which I didn't have before. I paid for its construction until its completion and ready to be used. I also purchased a dairy cow and once it reproduces, it will be saving my future, and that of my children since through it, I will be able to educate my children by selling some of them and also I will be able to sell the milk that I will be getting to earn an income. On the remaining amount, I paid some debts I was owing to my neighbours. I also bought some uniforms for my kids, who were going back to school."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have two cows that I am now depending on for milk production. I used to have three cows but all of them perished due to the severe famine that had stricken our land. The livestock lacked water and grass to feed on and they died. This was such a huge loss to me since I also depended on them for milk production in order to help me meet my daily needs. I am so happy today when I see the two cows and when I see my grandchildren go to school and them not being chased away due to lack of school fees. I see myself now being able to start a business of selling poultry and goats here in our village, this business will enable me meet my daily needs and those of my family. All I can tell GiveDirectly is to send the rest of the transfer as soon as possible so that I can be able to start this poultry business, other than that I am very grateful to Givedirectly."

"Coming from a pastoralist community, we have always desired to have our own cows. This signifies a store of wealth which in future will be resold to pay school fees for our children. Receiving this money therefore means we will be able to buy the cows and even employ someone to take care of them, so that they can increase in value for future resale. As such we are assured of our children's education which will make them self reliant in the future hence avoid over dependence on parents. "

"In the next four months, I am planning to buy a dairy cow. This is because in table banking the money I will get will be enough to buy a dairy cow. Currently I buy milk which is expensive and so if I get a dairy cow I will be able to save more money and use to buy food for my family."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is the fact that I now own a cow which I never thought of buying one day. I only saw cows from my neighbours and I felt they were the only people who can own a cow. I am now proud to have my own. I am happy that It will also provide us milk and upon reproducing it will cater for my children's education in the future."

"My life is different in that my children no longer miss to do their homework for lack of kerosene because of the reliable solar light that I bought using the cash transfer. There is a lot of peace in my marriage because I do not leave the house in the evening to watch the news in the local center because we can now watch the news together with my family at home. There is also my two cows that I bought, the joy that in few months time I shall start milking is great. I would have not been able to buy such quality grade cattle without the Givedirectly transfer since all the cash I earned from the casual work in the sugarcane farms always ended up in buying food for the family."
