Merceline
received a $195 initial payment.
"I have always wanted to be an Early Childhood Education Teacher, but because of lack of funds, I have not been able to take a professional course on this. My love for children has led me to become a Sunday school teacher at my church and my pastor has always encouraged me to pursue my teaching passion whenever I can and he will always support me. I will use part of the money GD will send me to enrol into college and the rest of the fees will be taken care of by my church. I will spend the rest of it on improving my business by renting a store and bringing in more stock to enable me make more profits to take care of my family."

"Securing a good job has been the biggest challenge in my life. This is due to lack of education. I am a standard five drop out and all my entire life, I have been doing casual jobs that earn me very little. I decided to do farming in our village but due to little rains, the harvests are not sustainable. This means that I have to struggle all the time to feed and educate my children"

"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is continuous struggle in educating my children. I am advanced in age with no permanent job hence unable to engage in any casual job. I, therefore, find it hard to support their education as I ought to as the head of the family. "

"The biggest hardship I have faced is lack of stable source of income which has seen my three children in the university and Secondary schools spend more time at home than in school due to lack of fees.It pains me so much to see them at home because education is the only good thing one can give to their children, yet I can not afford it for them."

"I am a housewife and I only depend on subsistence farming. My husband works as a cook in a hotel and earns only 200 shillings in a day. This is not sufficient to sustain the family. Therefore with this transfer I will start a hotel business in Bamba center. This will give me a stable income to meet family needs in terms of food, clothing and medical. I will also enroll in a tailoring school since it is the only option left after missing secondary education due to lack of funds. With this skill, I will open a tailoring shop that will earn me more income. I will use part of this transfer to completely build my house which is half way, and also purchase livestock for rearing."

Mary
received a $22 eighth payment.
"My main aim right now is to be able to pay school fees for my children so that they concentrate on their studies rather than spending most of the time staying at home when they are sent away because of not paying their fees. I really want to give them the best education I can because I know that education is the best gift that I can give to them."

received a $535 initial payment.
"I spent most part of my first transfer on paying school fees for my children who are in secondary school. I am a widow, and juggling between paying school fees and buying food for my children was not easy with the little money I get from the casual jobs I do. Trust me if GiveDirectly could not have come the time they did, my children would have dropped out of school. Honestly,I had given up on there education for lack of money. They did not even have good clothes like the current teenage girls. This used to embarrass me a lot and I could get scared when I saw young men coming around them with the imagination that they would lure them with gifts, those things I could not afford to give for lack of money and this could ruin their life. Making them drop out of school or even suffer from teenage unwanted pregnancies. Some of the money I spent on building materials that I used to build a nice house. My vegetation is mostly covered in sugarcane and there is nowhere to get grass that one could use to cover the grass thatched roofs like mine. You have to go inter-county to get grass, and you have to buy it.Most of the time I could even afford this. I used to be rained on a lot and I felt so frustrating even to my young children. I am glad this is not the case after I managed to build a more decent house."
