Tabu
received a $546 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer to buy an ox to help me in ploughing my land. Initially, I was hiring at a fee from my neighbours which was too costly and it took a lot of time before getting an opportunity for my farm to be cultivated due to the many people who also wanted the same service. I also spent some amount of money to buy four goats for domestic rearing and also as financial security for the future of my children's education. In addition to all these, I bought Iron sheets and some other building materials to construct my new house since the old one I was living in was in a bad state that was beyond repair, and it would constantly leak in times of rains for the roof was grass thatched. I can't forget mentioning buying clothes and enough food for my family."

Beatrice

"Since childhood, I have also been taught that education is a key to success and the fact that I wasn't given the opportunity to pursue it due to lack of money, I wouldn't like my children to face the same music. Therefore, for the next four months, I have a goal of saving the monthly transfers for my children's education."

Erick
received a $23 eighth payment.
"The biggest difference in my life brought about with these GD transfers is that I have been able to pay my children's school fees in time. I used to struggle to raise money to pay for their school fees since my only source of income is casual work of working for others on their farms. It was not consistent and during the dry seasons, I would subject my family to one meal a day being that I would not get any income sometimes in a whole day. With the transfers, I have been able to pay their school fees in time and also provide for their school needs such as school books, uniforms, shoes, pens in time. I know God willing if they succeed in education, they will help me eradicate poverty in my family when they finally get well-paying jobs."

Irine
received a $525 second payment.
"I spent my second transfer on opening Mobile Money Transaction Business (Mpesa business). Initially, we had only one source of income in the family and that was the casual job that my husband does in Nairobi. Being a casual worker, he earns wages that could not meet our family needs demand. But nowadays, out of my Mobile Money Transaction business, we have good income for the family needs and savings for my child education."

"Receiving this money means I will be able to stabilize myself financially. My husband and I had purchased a piece of land in Mwisho Moroni near Mombasa and ever since he passed away four years ago, I have not been able to develop it because he was the sole provider. With no source of income, situation became tough on my side.It has always been my desire to build rental houses and be a landlady; thankful to Give directly. Once I build those houses, I will be able to earn monthly income that can comfortably sustain my needs and that of my children. I want them get the best education and never lack basic necessities."

Kiplangat
received a $23 twelfth payment.
"Our household is and has been a well known household in our village. this is not becausee we have done alot of good things to make people want to know much about us but because of the great borrowing mentality that we had. it reached a time when we were under obligation to pay almost halt the village their debts which was becoming too much for us. this situation forced us to sell the only cow that we had in order to try and reclaim the lost respect from the villagers and for the next few months before GD came in we were struggling too much to make ends meet. buying milk ecvevry day using the little proceeds from the casual labor was not that easy. It then became a relief when GiveDirectly came in with the transfers wheich we are still receiving every month. most of our problems which includes sorting our basic needs and education for my children came to an end. our life compared to the last four months now is very stable and we are even happier as a family. No mopre debts and no more borrowing, our respect and friennship with the villageds was restored."

Effine
received a $524 second payment.
"I spent my second transfer on paying school fee for my brother who is currently enrolled in form four. My husband and I had been struggling before to pay school fee for both my children and my brother who is a total orphan. Receiving this transfer was a bigger relief to my family because from it we were able to comfortably clear fee arrears not only for my children, but also for my brother. As a family, we strongly believe that education will open for them greater doors of opportunities. Secondly, I spent the remaining portion of my transfer on purchasing a cow which I hope will provide us with milk once it gives birth. Although my household has been buying milk, from this cow, we will be able to get milk freely for our children and also sell part of it to raise some little money for our upkeep."
