How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before receiving my transfer, my main goal was to further the studies of my daughter. Despite her complicating her primary education, I had not able to take her to secondary school due to lack of enough finances for shopping as well as paying part of her fee. After receiving the transfer, I was able to take her to school and she is continuing with her studies. Nowadays, I am having peace of mind as well as happy about fulfilling my goal. Currently, I do not have any other new goals.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well for sending cash transfers directly to the household's phone. Also, the enrollment was done fairly and every household was visited and enrolled into the program. On my side, there is nothing that was not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 10,500 to purchase 3 goats this was to start a livestock rearing. Goats rearing can perform well unlike other livestock, this is an important asset as I will be able to sell them whenever I face financial challenges. In addition, I used KES 30,000 to take my daughter to secondary school, she had completed primary school two years ago but I did not have money for her to join secondary. I also completed the payment of fee arrears for my 2 children who are in primary school. With the remaining amount, I spent KES 5000 to boost my charcoal business which I had started with my first transfer.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy and grateful when I received the money because I knew I had gotten something that was going to help me address the pressing challenges I was facing, especially, school fees for my children. I had also been desiring to have a bed and mattress as well as find a lasting solution to the water problems we are facing which through this money, I was able to get a reservoir tank for water. I was so grateful the moment I received the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to address the challenges that were a nightmare before. School fees for my children was a very huge problem that used to give me sleepless nights, o needed to have a sustainable business but I neither had the ability nor means to get one. Therefore, when GiveDirectly came, all that changed and I was able to get the things I wanted and address the challenges I was facing. That is the biggest difference in my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer on my three children's college education, which cost a total of KES 18000 because they are almost done with their studies and I did not want them to be distracted or their education disrupted by the lack of school fees and accumulation of arrears. It was also a personal pledge I made to myself that I will give my all to ensure my children's dreams of completing their studies are fulfilled. However, I am hopeful and optimistic that with their good education, I will be able to count on them to help me address the challenges I will face in the future since they will be employed. Therefore, I am so grateful and hopeful. I also spent KES 15000 on starting my business that I had planned all along, which was buying and selling of charcoal. I rented a roadside stall where I store the charcoal I buy in sacks and sell them willing buyers who visit my stall. I did this because it will be my regular and sustainable source of income that I believe will be able to make me some money that will keep me going on the long term. I am so grateful and happy, all thanks to GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means continued education for my children. This I plan to achieve through charcoal vending. I will spend KES 30000 to buy charcoal and hire a structure where I will be selling charcoal. In this business I am assured of getting a profit of KES 2000 per day. I intend to use the proceeds for school fees, uniforms, stationery, etc. I will further spend KES 30000 to buy 10 goats that will act as a long term investment project to my household. The rest of my transfer will cater for other household expenses like food and water.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have desired a bright future for my children for long. In June this year one of my daughter joined college, this made me very happy and proud mother since my dreams are coming true.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food and water scarcity is the biggest challenge that I am currently facing. This is due to the ravaging of the drought that we are experiencing in our area. I buy 10 of 20 liters jerricans of water per week that cost me KES 500. This is very costly for me since I have to buy food every day for my family. With most money spend on food and water paying school fees for my children is now a problem for me.
