How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have always lived in a life where I spend everything I get. I was not so much into saving until I started receiving these transfers. The income from the ice cream business I had was not much hence I used to spend everything I got on a daily basis. Ever since I started receiving these transfers, I have always had what to spend and some amount remaining which is a very big difference in my life. As from this point, I embraced saving which has brought a lot of change in my life. I have also reduced my daily spending and using most of my finances on savings. I am glad when I have any financial emergency, I do not go for loans but use what I have saved. Thanks to GD.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
In the coming months, I still want to stabilise my cloth business which I have started with the transfers. I started the business with small stock and I would want to stabilise it with these transfers so as to boost the stock and profits.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on starting a cloth business. I have been doing an ice cream business and due to the cold weather we are experiencing now, I decided to venture into another business. The ice cream business was not doing well. The rest of the transfer I have saved and it will help me in case of any financial need.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Today, I am a proud self-dependent businesswoman courtesy of GiveDirectly. I had been a slave of low-paying casual jobs like washing people's clothes in Eastleigh where on bad days, I could go without money leaving me with an option of depending on my old grandmother. This work had a lot of demands hence I would get engage the whole week meaning I didn't have time for myself and my child's as well. Having this business has given me peace of mind and hope because I am able to take care of myself and my baby too using profits from the business. I am no longer a burden to my grandmother anymore instead I support her.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to make ice cream by myself through buying a freezer because this is the main equipment which I lack that will make my business successful. I prefer making it on my own because I will get more profits. Currently, I have to buy them each at three shillings and sell them each of them at five shillings, getting a sales of three hundred shillings in a day.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before, I used to do laundry around Eastleigh which was unreliable since most of the low income earner rely on around Nairobi . Therefore, I spent part of my transfer to boost my ice vending business. This is because the business was at the verger of collapsing since the larger part of the capital I had spent on attending to another agent emergency . Having this business means a lot to me since I get a daily income of 300 KES. I have saved the remaining amount since I intend to use the saving to buy a freezer hence I will be able to make ice by myself, at the moment I am buying at a wholesale price in a nearby wholesale shop.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, my life is different from how it was in that, I am self depended. I do not depend on casual jobs like washing people's clothes which were unreliable. At times I could go without money a day, leaving me with an option of depending on my grandmother. This to me was giving her a burden because I have a child who was also depending on her for basic needs. Having a reliable business has made me a happy mother because I am able to take care of myself and my baby too using profits from the business that I started with the previous transfer. I do not bother my grandmother anymore.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to make ice cream by myself. I prefer making it on my own because I will get more profits. Currently, I have to buy them each at three shillings and sell them each of them at five shillings, getting two shillings as profits from a single sales. I just want to work hard and buy a freezer because this is the main equipment which I lack that will make my work easier and my way to success.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer to boost my business. I normally sell ice to the school-going children. The business was almost collapsing. I did not want to give up on this business just because I didn't have money to boost it. When I look back on the kind of casual jobs which I used to do like washing people's clothes which is unreliable, this new one is way better because at least I get income every day. I am glad that it is doing well. I finally kept the remaining amount as savings.

I am planning to purchase a freezer to help me store my ice cream once they have been prepared, this will help save on the money I pay to rent a freezer. Meaning I will save more and earn more.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is that I can now sell my ice cream with a decent cooler that keeps them cool and nicely cold. Initially, they used to melt and I was forced to lose many customers. But now they are solid and they attract more customers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received this recent transfer, I was able to purchase a cooler for my ice cream business. This has been plan ever since but I had not gotten the resource to start up. The remaining amount I bought ice cups. This is currently a source of income for my household.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
The moment I received this transfer I was very happy and filled so much joy. I knew I was going to improve my business.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Since what Give Directly is giving as money for entreprenuership purpose, i would like to start a business of selling tomatoes and onions in town so that i can improve myself in life. Secondly, should my business not pull through, i have thought to pay for myself a catering course since i love stuff to deal with catering i will appreciate earning a degree certificate on it. Savings is my other option since its good to have back up that can help me pay my school fees and boost my business.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is family because my child is my most fear. I fear her lacking diapers especially during this cold weather season where she can't stay without one. Her lacking food because she can't consume what we prepared previous scares me especially when she has to starve because i dont have money to provide.
What are your greatest ambitions?
Growing up I have wished to be a tour guide or work in a children's home. Being a tour guide was driven by my love for animals while working in a Children's home was from my love for children and I know there is where children are in abundance and they lack parents.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
First thing i do in the mornings is prepare breakfast, do house chores especially washing utensils as tea is cooking then make food for my baby. Afterwards, I fetch water for household use and rush off to my daily hustle of washing clothes. After my work, I get home, groom up and relax as I await to prepare for supper. During my free time I browse alot and hang out with my friends telking stories.
