How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is totally different than how it would have been because I am now hopeful and happier. I am now a proud owner of a big piece of land that I have been aspiring to own for years but I couldn't afford it. The previous one was no longer production and I had to think of a permanent solution on the same. For most of the planting seasons, I had to lease my neighbor's which was very expensive. Since I depend on the odd jobs with the low income I never had the hope of owning one this soon, it's by the grace of God for bringing GiveDirectly into my life. Also, the three dairy cows that I purchased are now producing milk whereby my family does enjoy the white tea and the children are healthy and glowing. Also very soon I will start supplying the remaining liters to the local dairy shops and generate an income. Through this business, I believe I will be able to pay school fees for my children on time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to me GiveDirectly does well by ensuring they enrolled every deserved household in my entire region. There was no discrimination of either, tribe religion, gender, or even age. The elderly and those living with disabilities could not be left us as well. Also, the GD staff have been so humble to us and also approachable. They were always ready to offer assistance be here in society or even when we called through the toll-free number. Their services are on point and no one could complain. Therefore I do not see any part GD failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a bycycle at KES 5000. This will specifically help me majorly in carrying water. Also, I bought a dairy cow for a total of KES 15000. In addition, I bought a piece of land worthy of KES 18000. The previous one was no longer productive and there was a prolonged drought in my region, and I thought of an alternative permanent solution. With the remaining amount, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I got the message on the transfer very early in the morning as I was preparing to take my livestock to the grazing field. I could not believe it at first after reading the message that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I felt happy and rejoiced with my family for this financial support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer enabled me to buy livestock which include two heifers and a bull. I was keeping goats only with an aim of exchanging for a cow. However, the money has now helped to add these livestock to my cowshed. These are assets that that can be relied on in case of financial need. I will be able to educate my children through them. In addition, I will be selling milk thus earning an income to cater for my household needs. The bull will help me in ploughing, since I now have a complete pair of oxen. Owning the livestock is the biggest difference in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a larger portion of the transfer on buying two heifers and a bull which I am currently keeping them in my homestead. My expectation is that through these heifers, I will be able to raise school fees for my children who are still young. As they reproduce and increase in number, I can readily sell the offspring to help when in need. In addition to this, I also bought a bicycle to help in carrying water because currently we are faced with water shortage in our area. I have to travel over long distances in search for water. This bicycle is convenient for this purpose. Lastly, I purchased a new mattress and did some shopping on clothing for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a good house for my family. Our house collapsed in October last due to heavy rainfall thus rendering us homeless. I built a very small structure to shelter us but due to its limited size I decided to construct a bigger one. Currently, the new house is still open on the roof because grass is very scarce and I do not have to purchase iron sheets. This forces my wife and children to seek shelter at our relatives' houses during rains.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite all my financial problems, I am always a happy person. I always thank God for everything and I believe that he will make away out of this misery.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is my biggest hardship. This because I do not have a stable source of income to sustain us. My charcoal burning job is so tiresome that I cannot do it consistently. I end up taking food commodities on credit forcing me to live a life full of debts. This is the reason that has made it difficult to even provide a good shelter for my family.
