How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been because I now sleep comfortably in nice beddings. Back then, I was using the traditional beds made of ropes and some old torn clothes as mattresses. I was always complaining of painful backaches and I could always seek medication regularly. It was so stressful and the worst part was having sleepless nights while the rest were asleep. Therefore the beddings have brought joy in my life and I no longer experience any discomforts and pains.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did so well in the whole village considering the idea of giving out unconditional cash transfers that improved our standards of living especially fr the poor individuals which have never happened before. Most of us now have nice houses and its now rare to find the temrprampary huts that filled the whole village. Also, I do not see any sector GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a dairy cow and five goats at a total of KES 27000. I also paid school fees for my granddaughter who is still in primary school and I am glad she doesn't miss classes like before. Also, I bought some beddings such as a new bed and two mattresses. Initially, I used to sleep on the traditional beds which I was not comfortable with. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuff for my family

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was not aware that GiveDirectly had sent the first transfer since I could not understand the messages in my phone. It was until a neighbour asked whether I had received any transfer. I called for my helper later in the day who confirmed that I had KES 55000 in my mpesa account.I felt happy and thanked GiveDirectly for the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own a pair of oxen to plough my farm. I was previously hiring from neighbours which was costly. Since they are readily available, I am assured of preparing my farm timely for cultivation. For the first time now, I will no longer be hiring from anyone instead, I will be hiring to them at fee during the planting season thus earning an income. I am also expecting to get an increased harvest because I will be ploughing the whole acreage. This will ensure food security in my household.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the first transfer on buying a pair of oxen. I am glad that I will now be using my own pair of oxen to prepare my farm early and timely. They are readily available and cheaper as compared to using tractors, which are expensive with larger acreage. Apart from ploughing my farm, I will also be hiring them to my neighbours at a fee thus earning an income. In addition to this, I also purchased two matresses and a bed to replace the old beddings I was using with my children. I can now afford to sleep comfortably on my new bed and mattress. I spent the remaining amount to buy some foodstuffs that will save us for some weeks to come.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means, I will be able to fulfill my desires. I have been having the desire of owning a spacious house and beddings for my family but due to lack of finance I have not been able to do so. When I receive the Give directly transfers I will use 40,000 shillings to build a four-roomed house for my family. I will also use 20,000 shillings to buy 2 beds and 2 mattresses for the family. I also intend to use 20,000 shillings to buy 2 cattle for milking which will provide income to assist in a financial emergency. The remaining amount will be used to buy our daily basic needs such as food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I usually move around everyday carrying sisal ropes on my head selling at our nearby market. Occasionally, it becomes tiresome because I may walk around a whole day without selling them all .So it forces me to return with some at home which is the distance from the market. The evening becomes the happiest part of my day, this time I feel relaxed and I also spend more time with family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints are the biggest hardship in my life. This has forced me to go to our nearby town every day to sell sisal ropes. I usually get an income of 1000 shilling per month which is not enough to expand my house as well as buying beddings for my 6 children.
