How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to support the educational needs of my 4 grandchildren who were left under my care. This is after their mother left them home for work and never returned back. It is more than 3 years now since we have had communication with her. I intend to make sure they acquire quality education something that will enable them to have a nice and good life in the future after getting the necessary skills.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well in sending cash to poor households directly to their phones. Through the transfer, our lives were impacted positively because we spent it wisely. I am very grateful for the aid and I do not see anything that the organization did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my recent transfer to purchase two goats for $80 which is a future investment for myself that will help me once they reproduce. I will be able to sell them to support me whenever I face any financial emergency. Previously, I did not have any investment that would assist me whenever encountered a financial crisis. In addition, I used $110 to purchase proper bedding for the family since we were sleeping on mats as bedding on the floor on a high-raised ground in the house as a bed which was not comfortable. This was miserable life since experiencing body pains every morning was the norm of the day. Similarly, I spent $120 to purchase sufficient food since we are experiencing drought and famine making it hard to obtain food for the family. The charcoal-burning activity that I was depending on is no longer sustainable due to the depletion of the forest cover. With the remaining amount of the transfers, I used to lay my grandchild to rest since he died a few days after we received the transfer due to health problems.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I have been living in a house whose roof is in a deplorable state. Although I was longing to renovate it, I could not because I never had some sources of income. Therefore, I had to bear with such a hard situation. So when I received the transfer, I felt so happy because I knew I would be able to repair my house's roof. I felt some relief and I knew that my hour of elevation had finally come. That moment still rings in my mind because I count it a historical day in my life. Thanks to GiveDirectly for considering to bail me out of my misery.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
As a result of my illness, I was unable to provide food for my children because I was unable to actively participate in many income-generating activities. Unfortunately, my husband's income was also varying. Life has become better and easier since the transfer. I've been able to buy food for my family comfortably. I have been able to feed well since the transfer, and I am now stronger than I was before. In general, my three wonderful children have been eating well for nearly two months now, and we have never skipped a meal, which was normal for us before we began receiving the transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Because there has been famine in our area, it has been pretty hard to obtain food due to food price hikes. Immediately after I received my transfer, I spent KES 5,000 on buying food stock for my family. I am so glad that I have been able to feed them so well in the past 2 months. In contrast, this was very hard to do before I began receiving my transfer. In addition, I spent KES 20,000 on buying new iron sheets to repair the roofing for my house. My house roof has been in a deplorable state and whenever it rains, we lose our comfort because it seriously leaks. Fortunately, the situation has been curbed and we currently live in a better condition than before. Lastly, I spent KES 2,000 on my medication. For a couple of years, I have been suffering from a reproductive-related health issue. In summary, the transfer has played a key role in enabling me and the family to have a continuous food supply even though I have not been able to engage in any economic activity owing to my health condition.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I currently live in a borrowed land and recently the landlord demanded that I pay for the two acre piece of land. Buying the land means that I will earn the freedom of doing anything in this piece of land. I am planning to use KES40,000 from the GiveDirectly transfers to pay for the 2 acre peace of land. Furthermore, my house burnt down a week ago and this has rendered me homeless. I was later forced to seek refuge in my small kitchen. I will therefore use a further KES30,000 to renovate my three bedroom house. Paying for the land and renovating my house will accord me the peace I have always desired to have.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Over the christmas holidays, I had enough time of interacting with my children and grandchildren who had been in town for the whole year. This brought joy in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
A few days ago, my house was accidentally burnt down by my grandchildren. This rendered me homeless and we had to resort to my small kitchen for shelter. The kitchen area is not enough to house all of us and we are forced to squeeze ourselves. This has denied me the privacy I have always desired.
