How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, after getting the second transfer I developed some goals that I aim to achieve once I get some money. If I get money, I plan to invest it in farming both crop farming and livestock farming. For livestock, I will specify goats raring because goats can cope well with the climatic condition in our area because they can survive in drought areas, unlike cows.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am grateful for the support I received from GiveDirectly. Using the first transfer, I was able to build a nice house because the one I had was collapsing, and renovating it was not a better option for me. Through GiveDirectly, I have managed to do some of the things that I thought were undoable. Our community looks beautiful, not like before when it had poorly structured houses. GiveDirectly transformed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received and withdrew the second transfer, I first did some agriculture since I rely on subsistence farming to feed my family. I bought some seeds and fertilizer to boost my farming for proper production. I also bought a water tank of capacity 240 liters and 10 buckets for KES 3500.00. I bought these drums for storing water because water scarcity has been a problem in our area. Apart from that, I bought two bales of maize flour for KES 4200.00 to ensure food security at home because drought hit our area and we did not harvest as we expected. Besides buying a goat for KES 3800.00, I also bought some clothes for the whole family because the ones we had were overused.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was on my way home from fetching water when I received a message. I was tired after walking for many kilometers to and from the river and I didn't bother to open the message since I didn't think it was important and I wanted to get home first so that I can relax. As I was relaxing, I opened the messager and found out that I had received my first transfer. I was happy that finally, I was going to build a house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is that I have a house and I nolonger sleep in my mother in-law's kitchen. I hated the fact that I was inconveniencing my mother in-law and there was nothing I could do. I am happy that she's back to cooking from her kitchen and nolonger cooks from outside.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When my weak muddy house crumbled two years ago, I had to move to my mother in-law's kitchen with my husband and our two children because we could not afford to build another house. I didn't think we could stay there for long because I thought my husband who is a mechanic would manage to build us at least a single room. Two years below the line, we were still living in the same house and we had lost hope because my husband was getting very few jobs. When I was enrolled, my goal was to build a house for my family and I spend all my second transfer to build a semi-permanent one bedroom house. I'm happy now that I have a house I can call mine and my family has enough shared space to live in.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My major goal is to build a two-roomed house that will cost approximately KES 70000. This is because I share a single room with my two children whose roof is old and leaking. The remaining amount will help me to buy bedding and boost my grocery business. I will earn a profit of KES 200 per day which I will use to cater to the needs of my family. I will be indeed happy when I reach this target because I will be living in a spacious house that offers me comfort and privacy.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In January this year, my son was enrolled by the Compansion organization which will cater for his education expenses next year. This has brought joy and happiness to me because I will be relieved of the burden of paying for school fees. This will enable my child to spend concentrate on his studies and perform better in exams.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I run a grocery business that I depend on for all the basic needs such as food, clothing, and water. The cost of food prices is high and in a day I spend KES 300. The proceed I get KES 3000 per month is not sufficient hence it has been a challenge to save enough money to build a big house. Lack of finances is the major challenge that I am currently facing. Sometimes, I have to ask my relatives to accommodate my visitors which is shameful.
