How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to buy one dairy cow. Having built a new house, bought furniture and started a small business with the first and second transfer, what came into my mind was purchasing a dairy cow. I currently do not own one and I am forced to buy milk which is very costly. Once I am able to raise enough money through a savings plan that I have started then I will be able to buy one. This dairy cow shall definitely be a game changer in my life. I look forward towards achieving this soon enough.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well by giving us support in form of cash. Giving the aid in form of cash meant that we received the money and utilized it in a way that brought benefits to us. Different people have had their lives changed differently after receiving the cash.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 20000 to buy household's furniture. I did not have any furniture in the new house that I built using the first transfer. We used another KES 15000 to clear debts owed to us by a neighbour while the amount that remained was used to pay school fees for our children. I am so happy at what this transfer has done in our lives. Being a single mother, I could not raise enough money to build a decent house when my first house was destroyed. Being a widow and all things looking up to me, I could only raise enough money to feed my five children. I am however very happy to have my dignity back after building a new house for my family. This is the LORD'S doing!

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I thanked God when I received a message from GiveDirectly that brought forth a great excitement after reading and confirming that I had received the transfers. It was around exactly 5:02 PM, at my workplace where I still had to work another one hour before closing my maize-selling business. Right after the close of my business, I withdrew the whole amount and walked home, as usual, to avoid any suspicion from people who are used to seeing me walking to and from home. I later went home and shared the good news with my very excited children.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The construction of a new and spacious house that comfortably accommodates my family of six is the biggest difference in my daily life. I am grateful that I was allowed to plan and addressed the main challenge that I had among others that I am still hoping to address once I receive the second transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After the death of my husband some years ago, I had been raising my five children single-handedly through the challenging and most demanding moments. All along, we had been living in a single hut that I have kept renovating since I could not pick a new construction while struggling to meet other pressing financial obligations. On receiving this support from GiveDirectly, I spent approximately KES 40000 on the construction of a new house that I had to buy everything right from the building poles, iron sheets, nails, and also frames and timber that were used in roofing. I also paid a labor charge of KES 5000 which did a very good job in ensuring that the construction was complete within a very short time. I am happy that we are now doing the final furnishing stages before we fully move in. I then spent the remaining amount on burying enough foodstuff for my household after failing to work throughout the construction period. I am grateful to GiveDirectly and hopeful that the second transfer will bring another big difference to my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means quality education for my children. I have 5 school-going children; 3 in primary level, 1 in secondary level, and 1 is yet to join college after her secondary education level. Because of the huge burden that comes with education expenses, I have been unable to take one of my children to college. Raising a family of 5 single-handedly is an uphill task because my husband passed on 14 years ago. I am now glad that I will be able to pay college fees for my daughter using the transfer and fulfill their dreams.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My firstborn daughter completed her secondary level education in the last 6 months and this has brought joy and happiness to my life. I feel I have been relieved from the burden of paying more school fees. I can meet other education expenses without much hustle and I am grateful to God for that.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
A prolonged period of drought has been the biggest challenge we are currently facing. In the previous year, we were unable to harvest anything in our one-acre piece of land due to lack of rainfall. In the subsequent years, we used to experience low crop production due to inadequate rainfall. I feel sad that if this condition persists, my household will perish due to a lack of food especially now that we were unable to harvest anything.
