How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment, I have one heifer and my new goal is to buy a dairy cow so that I can have milk for use at home and for sale. The income generated from sale of milk would assist me to pay school fees for my children with less struggle. I believe that we will be able to save towards our goal through part of my spouse's daily income which he earns from car wash service.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly gave financial support and told us to spend wisely and not to misuse in any way. We took those teaching seriously and put the money in good use for the betterment of our lives. As at now the difference can be noticed from livestock, houses and children who are going to school as an impact of the transfer received. According to me, I never noticed anything that was not done well by this organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My daughter was joining tertiary college to undertake a tailoring course and the money which I received enabled me to pay KES 16000 as school fees for her. I then spent another amount of KES 10000 on buying school supplies and shopping for her. The remaining amount, I spent on buying foodstuffs and some new clothes for ourselves. I am glad that I got the aid when I needed money the most.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 am. I was checking my phone as Usual. There was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I have never received such an amount of money before. I felt so happy because GiveDirectly has fulfilled its promise of improving our living standards. I immediately inform my spouse and children. Everyone felt so happy and that morning was the happiest morning we have ever had. We knew we would be able to purchase build materials to build a better and more spacious house for my family. We went and withdrew the money the following day. GiveDirectly had enabled us to achieve our dream.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Building a house for my children is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because they used to live in a small grass thatched house which was leaking from inside. I had always wanted to build a better house for them but I did not have the money. This was giving me restless nights because during the rainy season they were being exposed to cold. We depend on casual jobs in the village and this earns small money. I could spend on food and clothes. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly my main priority was to purchase the materials and build a better and more spacious house for my family. Currently, they are living comfortably and they are so happy. They are no longer being exposed to cold. They do their assignment and sleep well. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards. I have peace of mind to conduct my daily routine knowing that my children are happy.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 25,000 on purchasing building materials and building a better house for my children. They used to live in a small grass thatched house which was leaking from inside. Currently, they have a decent house and they are so happy because they do their assignment and sleep well. I spend KES 5,000 to pay school fees for my son who is in secondary school. He is now studying well without being disturbed like before. The rest of the money I spent on food and clothes for the children. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards to be much better than before.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We are a family of nine with the majority of my children still young. The house we live in is small and it leaks often during rainy seasons making it uncomfortable, cold, and unhealthy for my children sleeping on the floor. We have been thinking of constructing another bigger house that can accommodate all of us. Receiving this money, therefore, means this dream will through true. I plan to use KES 25,000. With the remaining amount, I will buy a dairy cow and some goats.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The only cow we have calved down six months ago. It was the happiest thing to happen to us in a long time. Currently, we do not purchase milk, we get our own hence reducing our daily expenditure by a big margin. This still makes me happy .
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge is food insecurity. We purchase foodstuff including mainly maize flour and milk occasionally. Maize flour costs us KES 3000 per month which is very costly and it strains us a lot. My husband is a casual laborer at a carwash center earning KES 500 a day which goes to food and school needs for our children. This leaves us with almost nothing to save up for the developments.
