How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have been married for over 20 years and the major challenge I have been encountering is the fact that I did have a permanent house. Having have received my transfers that were my priority. I managed to construct a spacious house that is well plastered and permanent. The previous one could not accommodate some of my family members so they were forced to seek shelter at my neighbors and relatives. I am so happy now because we are happily living together which has always been my prayer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly dies weel in so many sectors. One, we were given a proper education concerning how best we can utilize the transfers. In addition to that, everyone was enrolled provided you were a resident to that particular village. The registration was free and fair, no one asked me to pay anything in return.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying some building materials such as some pieces of iron sheets, a metal door , cement. This was the completion of my house which I was initially constructing using the first transfer. I then paid school fees for my who is in secondary school and bought some new uniforms for those who are still n primary school. Later, I paid the labor KES 11400 as his labor charge., the remaining amount I bought enough foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Building a new house is the biggest difference in my daily life. My family of nine children were forced to seek shelter elsewhere because my previous house, though in a good state, was not spacious enough. They had to walk to my neighbors house at night. When I received this transfer, I went ahead and bought building materials which include 30 pieces of iron sheets, nails and building poles to construct the new spacious house that will accommodate my family. I also paid for the full cost of labour. I am glad that my children will no longer be troubled anymore as they will be staying on the previous one.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the message at 6 am in the morning since I was already up for my day's tasks. On checking the contents of that message I realized it was from Give Directly. I remember jumping with joy when I realized that I had received KES 55000. I have never received such an amount of money in my life and I thanked them, knowing that the money was enough to build a new house.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
My previous house was still in very good shape although it was very small. It could not accommodate my nine children who were growing very fast. They are now out of age, I was never at peace seeing them seeking shelter in the neighbourhood. When I received my first transfer, my priority was to build a new spacious house. I purchased enough building materials to facilitate the building process. I also paid KES 15000 for the full cost of labor. Once the new house is complete, my children will now stay in the previous which is still in a good state. In addition to that, also spent KES 8000 to pay for my child school fees who is in high school. I also spent KES 4500 to buy a new mattress to replace my old bedding. I used the rest of the amount to pay for other household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house is so small that it cannot accommodate my family of 10. It is the same single room that we share every day no matter how squeezed it is. Besides it does not have a door and this threatens our security. There is even a day I woke at night only to find a huge venomous snake coiled next to my children. This situation has really stirred up my desire to give my children a better shelter. I will therefore use part of this transfer to fulfil my dream. In addition, I will set up a grocery business to generate income for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon. This is after my morning duties that include household chores and farm work. Since they are very cumbersome I always long for afternoons to get some rest.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is my biggest hardship. This is attributed to the fact that I am a house wife and the entire family depends on my husband for a living, yet he is a casual labourer. This has negatively affected our living status in terms of providing basic. It is due to this that we live under a very poor shelter. As if this is not enough, hunger is the order of the day in my family especially during dry seasons. I cannot even afford school fees and my children are often sent back home.
