How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am grateful to GiveDirectly because through their money I can now pay rent in time. Previously I used to struggle a lot and sometimes I could not afford it. To add to that, my family can take three meals a day unlike before whereby the used to take a single meal. I sm so happily and if it were not for GD coming to my village, I would not have achieved this.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
The new goal that I now have is to expand my business of selling some second-hand clothes. This is what I have been depending own and I have been a hawker for all those years but I now want to open a stall specific for that business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my recent transfer on paying rent at a total of 2000. The remaining amount of money I bought some foodstuffs and some other household items that I was lacking.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do causal jobs at the construction site which is always hard to get work the whole week in a good week I am able to work for three days with a daily wage of 500 KES per day. Therefore, to me GiveDirectly's monthly transfers means alot as an alternative source of income . At the moment, I am able to pay my monthly house rent comfortably on time unlike before where I had stayed with three months arrears and when the landlord had no option he / she used to send us out surprisingly in a year we had to stay in six houses. Depending on a small wage made the provision of my family's basic needs to be overwhelming. Currently, my life has changed because on a monthly basis I pay my rent with ease with part of my transfers and I also boost my spouse's grocery business , as a result, we have a slightly reliable extra income thanks to GiveDirectly.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to start keeping poultry since I have a spacious compound that can comfortably enable this business establish in. Out of my research poultry keeping has a lot of benefits which include selling the laid eggs, and poultry to serve as my household's alternative source of income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the larger portion of my recent transfer to pay my house rent.I am glad GiveDirectly did not allow me to be sent away from my house due to late payment of rent. The rest of the transfer I used on boosting my wife grocery business. It has not been doing well because its our main source of income and all my needs most of the times depends on the profits from the business. I am glad the business is now picking up well thanks to GiveDirectly.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it was in that, I take care of my needs easily. I can even pay rent on time because I use the transfer to pay it. Before then, I could do multiple casual jobs to take care of most of my needs but it was was not still enough. I am also able to do shopping for a month and for the dry days, I can still have food on the table. I have learned the art of planing.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to make sure my wife's business is stable. I do casual jobs like construction work but I will want her to get an income which with supplement our income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I kept the whole of my transfer as saving hoping to start a business for my wife. She has been involved in poultry keeping and the sales are low. We have decided to sell clothes because atleast to get income every day.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My goal now that I have started receiving the money is to start a second-hand clothes business. This is because the business deals with no perishable goods and does not have to be sold in one place since one can easily move from one market to another. Starting a business will enable me to get money to use to meet my family needs and pay our bills like rent and electricity on time.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly is that I nowadays have an alternative source of income unlike before. My current alternative source of income is these transfers. This is because before GiveDirectly came for enrolment, my only source of income was through doing some casual work and this is a different case now. Getting money from GiveDirectly has enabled me to meet my family needs on time and I always pay my bills also on time unlike before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my most recent transfer to pay my house rent. I received this money at a time when I had not paid my house rent since I had no money to use. When we started receiving our transfers, we started a merry go round in our group as a way of making one receive cash in a lump sum. When I received my most recent transfer, I used the remaining amount to pay for my contribution the group
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I started receiving my money. Receiving my first transfer gave me hope that my children would dress well during the festive season unlike other years where they used to wear their old clothes and their teen would laugh at them.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My plan is to open a small scale business for my wife because she stays in the house without doing anything. I want her to be selling vegetables. Secondly I want to pay for rent without failure and lastly educate my children through paying school fees.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is police violence because since I was born in mathare I have seen police collecting bribe, harassing women, youths and that has not stopped till now. Unemployment being the biggest challenge in Kenya because of lack of opportunities. Lastly daily sustenance because if you can't sustain yourself and your family you will end up drinking alcohol and engaging in other bad behavior.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambitions is to relocate to nakuru with my family because I was born in Mathare and I feel that I need to change my life in a different area far from the slum. I also want to own my own land and become a farmer.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
I wake up early at 6:00am take tea. I then join my colleges where we wait to be called by constructors for casual labor work. If I get lucky then I work until we break for lunch then I resume to work until 5:00pm then head back home take a shower wait for supper to be prepared by my wife. When the food is ready I eat and sleep. On my free time I watch movies together with my children at home.
