My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have rent a piece of land. I am a horticulture farmer. I do plant potatoes and vegetables on my fard. In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.

I spend part of the money I received from GiveDirectly to clear the outstanding balance that I had. It costed me 20,000 Ksh. I am so happy because this could have taken me longer to get such amount of money. I used the rest to rest a piece of land. Ploughed it and planted potatoes. This will be a source of income for the family because I will sell the produce to earn an income. I also bought food for the family.

I was still at the farm doing some work when my wife came in and she told me that she had heard from the neighbors that some people have started receiving the transfers. I decided to check my phone and to my surprise, there was the SMS saying that we had received the lump sum amount from GiveDirectly as promised. We became so happy on seeing this, we thanked God because we knew the plans that we had made were now going to be fulfilled.

We will hence not have any worries about what we are to eat. My children are happy too because they got new clothes for themselves.

This money from GiveDirectly has helped me and my family in a big way. We were able to get capital to start a business that we have always desired. My wife used to do the business of selling second-hand clothes before I got married to her. She thus knows how good the business is and she has always had that desire to restart it. I hence decided to give her part of the transfer so that she can use it in restarting it. The transfer also enabled me to buy a farm spraying machine. I am a farmer and I usually grow tomatoes and potatoes. Sometimes we do experience a dry season in our area and the crops dry hence causing a lot of wastage. I decided to buy a second-hand spraying machine so that it can help me during the dry season. I was also able to buy two digging hoes, a spraying pump, and some insecticides for spraying the tomatoes. I also rented a piece of land that I plan to grow some potatoes. I was also able to buy 2 bags of potato seeds, a mattress, clothes, and gumboots. Other than the above, I also bought 35 tins of maize for my family’s consumption. The above had become hard for us to achieve especially buying the farm spraying machine and starting the business because we lacked the money to do so. I hence thank GiveDirectly because they have enabled us to have what we have always desired.
