How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After accomplishing my main goals of owning a motorbike and starting a small grocery business. I currently have a source of income for the family. I am grateful to have fulfilled all these with my transfer. At the moment, I do not have any new goals I would like to fulfill.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in sending cash transfers directly to our mobile phones. In addition, every household in our village was enrolled without bias or discrimination. I do not believe that there is something that the organization did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 5,000 to start a small grocery business selling kales, sukuma wiki, and grilling corns at the nearby market center. Also, I am using the motorbike that I bought with my first transfer in vending the vegetables. Moreover, I used KES 1,500 on supporting the education of my sibling by paying part of his school fees. Lastly, there was an extreme famine in our area and I decide to spend all the remaining amount on acquiring sufficient foodstuffs for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 AM when I was from the dam and had even started preparing to start doing my daily house chores. Suddenly, I heard my phone ringing. Upon checking, I realized it was Mpesa message from Segovia Technology, I have finally received my first transfer as promised. I was overwhelmed with joy and decided to share the news with my dear spouse. This message really made my day and the Lord continue to bless the entire organization.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now sleeping in a decent house. To me, this is the greatest fulfillment that will forever remain in my heart. The shelter has been my biggest challenge since our old house was in a pathetic state and almost collapsing. It would leak uncontrollably when it rains forcing me to squeeze my items to corners to avoid them being rained on. The harsh weather and cold nights were unbearable. I had no hope of upgrading to a better house since I depend on my Husband's little income( KES 100 in a day) from his motorbike services. His income only catered for our daily food. I am at peace and grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling me to build a new and decent house to live in with my family. I am no longer worried about rains or even other insecurities.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my first transfer in buying twelve pieces of iron sheets KES 7800, poles at KES 5000, nails, and threads for KES 2000. I also gave the mason KES 4000 as his labor charge. I had intended to build a new house because having a look at the previous one, it was in critical condition and very small. With my three family members, it could not fit us. To add to that, I purchased new clothes for my child to at least replace the old ones which were old and torn. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough food for my family that would sustain us for weeks.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My dream has been to construct a decent house for my family but this dream has not come true due to financial instability. I depend on my husband who works as a gardener. Receiving this money means fulfilling it. I am planning to spend 60,000 shillings on construction. This is going to enable us to live decent and comfortable life.Currently, the house we are in is too small and also leaks during the rainy season. When it's raining we are forced to find shelter at our neighbors which sometimes challenges me with the kinds especially at night. Other than that, I will invest the remaining amount in the small business of selling vegetables. This is going to generate income for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is my happiest part of the day. It is at this time when I have enough time to do my house chores. I enjoy doing this chores as a woman.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
lack of a good source of income is my biggest challenge. I always depend on my husband who works as a gardener. This job earns him a salary of 6000 Kenya shillings. This amount is not enough to cater for all our basic needs such as food and shelter .
