How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We mainly depend on small scale subsistence farming to meet most of our needs such as school fees payment and food for my family. For quite a while now, the farms haven't been producing well and hence little income from the sale of the farm produce. My children were at the brink of being sent home for school fees because I had some arrears pending for my two children. I am glad that the transfers came at the nick of time and I was able to clear the arrears. I am happy now that I do not need to worry that they would be sent home. Had I not received these transfers, I would have also invested in the livestock. I am now a proud owner of a cow, two sheep and a chicken, which already has started laying eggs. In the near future, I am sure they would have reproduced.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I loved that the officers from GiveDirectly did not ask for bribes or so many conditions for one to qualify into the program. There was fairness as every household in the village received the same amount. Everything was well done.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent a big portion of the transfer to pay my children's school fees. I had some school fees arrears fro my two children in high school. The high arrears were occasioned by the low farm produce. I also bought clothes and food for my family with the rest of the transfer.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I majorly depend on subsistence farming which has not been doing well enough to cater for both household daily needs and any other goal in the family. I have children in various schools and my biggest ambition is to see them prosper in their education to allow them to have a better life in the future. Raising their school fees is challenging for me due to the limited resources in our family. When I received my first transfer I took KES20000 to help me process the admission of my child who was joining secondary school and ton cater for his fist term fee. I took another KES10000 to pay fee for my child in form two. I am so glad that my children are now set up working for a better life in the future in a humble environment. To me, raising this amount is the biggest difference in my daily life. It gives hope that I can always provide for my family.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I realized that GiveDirectly had sent me money early that morning after reading a new message I received. I felt so happy knowing that financial support will fulfill my dreams of bringing more assets to my family.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on purchasing a heifer and a sheep to add to my livestock I had Initially. I believe that adding a heifer is a big achievement because I will produce more milk for both household consumption and sales when it calves. I believe the offsprings will give me the security of financial emergencies arising in my family. In addition to this, I also spent a larger amount of the transfer on paying tuition fees for my children in various secondary schools. This has enabled them to comfortably joined the secondary school and continue with their studies for a whole term without any interruptions. I took another part of my transfer to spend on my family clothing and bedding to add and replace the few old we had. I have been spending some amount on to provide for my family's daily basic needs such as food and in paying other household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will help me add one cow to the two that I have.I will spend Ksh 20,000(200USD) to buy the dairy cow. This will obviously lead to increase in milk production. If I sell about 5 litres I will be able to take care of the family's basic needs like food, clothes and shelter.I will also use the money to pay school fees for my children.I have two children in secondary school and one who will be joining come next year. This money will help a lot in easing this burden.I was already in a dilemma not knowing where to get their school fees but I am glad Give Directly has come to my rescue.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After milking the cows early in the morning ,I go to the farm where I grow maize and beans. The farm is where I spend most of the day.I enjoy the morning hours when the sun is not burning hard .My out put is usually high. The sun is usually scorching later during the day. This makes me very tired.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Depending on agriculture has been very difficult because I don't get much from it.I am a subsistence farmer who cultivates one acre of land. From the one acre I get not more than 5 sacks of maize and 2 sacks of beans. This is to serve as food for the family and again for sale. This is usually not enough to sustain other needs;the biggest headache being school fees. The low yield is attributed to unpredictable weather patterns and crop diseases.I have 8 children and I struggle a lot taking care of their needs.
