How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment, I don't have any new goals since I am still working on the farming that I intensified after receiving the first and the second transfer. I am looking forward to improving it every other time since it is currently the only source of income I am depending on.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am thankful that I was allowed to choose what I needed to spend the money on after receiving it. The information that was disseminated at the initial stages of enrollment was very useful to every member as this was depicted on the great spending habits by many. I have no complaint at all but am grateful for everything that GiveDirectly did for us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After a long struggle fetching water from the river - located more than 3 kilometers away- I am glad to have finally purchased a large water tank worth KES 18000 from my second transfer. This has saved me a lot of time and resources that I would use to ensure that I get some liters of water every day. I also managed to complete the construction and the furnishing of my new house that I had initiated with the first transfer. I bought and fixed the ceiling board with KES 9000, fixed the floor, and applied pinned a mended canvas worth KES3500 on the walls to shield the crevices from letting in a cold breeze every night, and also brought in new furniture worth KES 6100. The room is so clean at the moment and so warm that I hardly sleep with a blanket at night. I spent part of the remaining amount on tilling my piece of land and planting with a total cost of KES 2000 and used the last bit on clothing and foodstuff for y household members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was alone in the house when I received a notification message that I had to inform my daughter-in-law who helped in reading it. She confirmed the content with excitement as we had been expecting together the receipt of the transfer. The news equally excited me and had to start planning as I needed to first receive before making any plan over it. I thanked God for the great support I was getting from GiveDirectly and promised myself to make great changes in my household out of the amount I had received.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Renovation of my house both on the floor and the exterior walls where I laid a strong starter strip to prevent rainwater from splashing on the wooden walls and making the poles and timber rot is the biggest difference in my daily life. I find it easier to clean the floors at the moment and not straining anymore now that I am alone in the house. I am grateful to God and GiveDirectly for the great support that has made me smile again.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After leaving the construction of my house hanging for over a year now, I was glad to finally complete it after receiving my first transfer. The financial strain I had in the past was due to a lot of financial obligations both for my household and also for my grandchildren whom I had been helping in school fees payment. I needed to replace some timber and post that were already rotting due to the splashing rainwater whenever it rained. I had to obtain sand, gravel, and cement all meant for the floor, and also fixing the starter strip around the exterior walls. After settling the transportation and labor charges, I had exhausted all the KES 55000 I had received. I am happy that this project is finally complete. Cleaning the floors is easier compared to the previous time especially now that my age is catching up with me.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
With my age I cannot fend for myself and my two grandchildren whom are am looking after.I solely depend on my son to provide food, clothing and their school levies. The house I am living in was built temporarily for me by my son.I want to have a good house and educate my grandchildren well.A good two-roomed house would cost me KES 40,000 and two-dairy cows at a total cost of KES 60,000.In about two years I would be getting 8 litres of milk per day from the two cows that I can sell at KES 240.This income would be enough for me and I will be financially independent.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am having storytime with my grandchildren.I always spend the whole day alone at home doing chores after they have left for school. They make me happy and relieve me from stress when I see them growing up well and healthy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband passed on 6 years ago and my daughter left her two children aged 6 and 10 years old under my care and went to get married somewhere else.I was forced to take up the responsibility of raising them. With my age my health is deteriorating and I am not productive as I used to hence I cannot do farming. This makes me depend wholly on my son and it I feel am a burden to him. This is the biggest hardship I have experienced in my life.
