What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
When I get thisoeny, I will invest it in livestock. In 2020, we had some riots in our village because my brother was chosen to be a guard at the Forest so there were ill feelings from the rest of the villagers that he was snitching on them that they are cutting trees for charcoal making. They came and burnt down our houses, stole our livestock and we are only rebulding now. I will use the other money to buy fertilizer so that we have good harvests next year.
What is the happiest part of your day?
There hasn't been much to make us happy. We struggle with a lot of things. We just get by.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our biggest challenge is money. We don't have a stable source of income and that is why we end up asking charcoal which although is illegal, it pays. But now since protecting the forests, we're unable to and that leaves a big gap in our stream of income. We rarely harvest well because we don't have money to buy fertilizer with. This year, we only harvested 4 bags and once that runs out then we're in trouble because maize prices have gone up, we can barely afford it.
