How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My biggest goal is to purchase a parcel of land so that my cows can graze freely and sufficiently, I plan to achieve this dream by portioning out some of my monthly wages, it might take longer but I am optimistic that I will fulfil It with time. Moreover, I am thankful that the transfer uplifted my living standards.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
We are more than happy to have received the funds from GiveDirectly, we no longer have grass-thatched houses in our village, the transformation is amazing, I never thought that I would be able to own a cow, it is a dream come true. Throughout my interaction with the staff, I have not witnessed any malpractice.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a casual labourer within the village, married with two children, upon receiving my second transfer I thought of purchasing a dairy cow at KES 30,000 to cut down the cost of buying milk daily, this is because a litre sells at KES 40 depending on the season, I then used KES 10,000 in starting a goat rearing business where I bought three goats, in ensuring that my family had enough to eat I bought three bags of maize at KES 7500, lastly, I bought clothes with the remaining amount, I am happy that I own a cow which I was unable to buy before due to financial constraints. I am grateful for the support that has lifted my living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was filled with joy when I first received a message from GiveDirectly confirming the receipt of the first transfer. It had been such a hard life I had been living that contributed to my wife and children being taken back by my mother-in-law since I had not paid any dowry and could not provide fully for them. I was working in a different village that day where I had been attending my daily casual job. I had to call my wife and inform her of the good news and tell her all that I intended to spend the money on. Later that day, I managed to withdraw and purchase enough iron sheets for the new house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the construction of a new house. Living in a grass-thatched hut that leaked on the roof with crevices on the walls that let in a lot of colds was never conducive for my children. I am happy that things are slowly changing and giving me hope of bringing my family back home to a well-furnished house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Construction of a new house was a the top of my spending list when I withdrew my transfer. I had been living in a single hut that was too old that it always allowed drips of water from the roof whenever it rained. This was not conducive for my two children who were always affected by a common cold. I had to purchase 22 iron sheets, building poles, nails and also paid the labor charges for the construction work that cost a total of KES35000. I also invested KES6000 in a goat that I am currently rearing with a plan to sell in the future. With the remaining amount, I obtained a sack of maize at KES3500, new bedding and clothing at KES5000, and also settled all the debts I had. I am glad that I managed to do a lot that I am proud of and looking forward to the second transfer that will enable me to obtain a lactating cow for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been working hard to build a modern house with no success since my casual job earns me less money and sometimes not enough to buy food and basic needs for myself. When I receive this money I will use $400 to build a two roomed iron sheet house. Since milk is on high demand in this area, I will buy a dairy cow at $300 to enable me earn money through sell of milk . I will also fence my compound with $100 and I will do farming with $200. The remaining $150 I will use to buy goats
What is the happiest part of your day?
Afternoon about 2PM (EAT) is the happiest part of my day, am happy since have had something to eat.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of finance has been my big challenge, I usually rely on casual jobs(herding) which gives me little money to support myself. This also led to separation with my wife since I was not able to raise and provide for them.
