How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The goal is to start a small shop business in the village. At the moment, we are forced to walk for more than 14 km to the nearby shop to purchase our daily home items like foodstuffs. Starting this shop business will ensure me of the ready market because there is no shop around. Additionally, I will save the community members the stress of having to go for long distances to acquire small household items. The money that I will generate from the business will help in educating my children and providing basic needs like food for the family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well in coming to our area and enrolling all the poor households in the program without any discrimination based on tribal. Furthermore, they conveyed a meeting to inform us about the whole process from the beginning to when we expected the cash transfer. Through those meetings, we were able to understand and ask questions concerning the program. I feel the process was clear and there is nothing that they should modify in the next village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For many years, I have desired to own a decent house for my family of 3 members. I spent $350 to construct a decent, 2-roomed house for myself. This is because I was living with my two kids in a small grass-thatched house that was leaking during the rainy season. Currently, I am happy that I reside in a better shelter. With the remaining amount, I enrolled my firstborn on school by purchasing uniforms and paying part of the school fees. In addition, I bought enough food and clothes for every family member.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home doing some laundry when I heard a beep on my phone. I immediately checked and saw that I had received funds from give directly. My heart skipped with joy for I saw the financial freedom I would receive from these funds as I was unemployed and dependent on my family and friends. My very first thought was to purchase some goats which I did a week after.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The most significant difference I have seen in my life ever since I started receiving these funds is the fact that I am now employed. Before, I depended on my family and friends for financial support so I could fend for my two children. I didn't even have a way forward on how I would be able to manage to pay their fee as my firstborn was set to start school. Thanks to the cash transfer I am receiving from give directly, I run a restaurant business that makes a daily sale of KES 5000 which I believe will grow.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Three years ago, after my husband and I separated, I moved back to my parents' compound and I would often depend on them as I was unemployed. If they lacked money, I would borrow from my neighbors just to feed my two children. I also had plans of sending my firstborn, who was turning four, to kindergarten although, I never had the funds to pay for his entry fee. When I received the money from give directly, I did some shopping for him and paid for his admission. I then bought 5 goats to rear for some economic security. To create some financial independence, I bought two dozen packets of wheat and maize flour each and 25litres of cooking oil to start a restaurant business.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have desired to upgrade my existing old grass-thatched house into an iron sheet roofed semi permanent structure. Currently, I am residing in an old and worn out house that is leaking during rainy seasons. This creates unfavorable living condition for my family. My plan is therefore, to use KES 40000 to build a better house with two rooms and iron sheet roof to accommodate us comfortably. I will further spend KES 20000 to start a grocery shop that will act as a source of income for my house hold.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month, we received food from the government. I was one of the beneficiaries whereby I was given 10 kilograms of maize and 2 kilograms of beans. This stock lasts me 3 weeks and we did not skip meals for those 3 weeks. I was able to save the little amount which I used on buying food for other household expenses.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial crisis is the biggest challenge that I am currently facing. This has forced me to engage in charcoal work in order to earn money that can support me to cater for basic needs of my family. Considering this earnings which is as little as KES 5000 per month. This amount can not fully sustain all our needs. I have been struggling to provide for my family and sometimes I fail to put food on the table.
