How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any other new goal except concentrating on my livestock farming business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I like the fact that GiveDirectly lived to their word by sending us the transfer as stipulated and on time hence enabling us achieve our goals. Our living standards have indeed improved. Their is nothing that did not go well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I have been passionate about livestock farming. I have just been waiting for the right time. I did not hesitate to actualize it when I got my second transfer. I did purchae 3 goats and two bulls at the cost of KES 10500 and KES 40000 respectively. Besides, I did buy food for my mother and I thus saving us from the pang of hunger. My main economic activity has been selling charcoals to make ends meet albeit it challenges. I feel happy to have been considered for this program by GiveDirectly. Thanks you so much for the financial support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning and I had just woken up ready to start my day when I heard an alert of an incoming message. Upon checking, I saw that I had received funds from give directly. I felt empowered and very blessed. All I thought of was building myself a three-roomed house so I could move out of my mother's house which is very squeezed.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life has been full of financial constraints, which was the reason why my wife left as I could not raise funds for her dowry. At the time, I used to work as a traditional palm wine brewer. But one day, while I was getting coconuts from a palm tree, I fell off and broke my leg and my arm. Since then, I have not been able to continue with my work. I then started working as a charcoal manufacturer. Even though the earnings I get from it are very little, they have helped my mother and I manage. I've also been able to support my son, who currently stays with his mother. Now that I started receiving these funds, I feel there's a great difference and I am more empowered and determined to improve my life. so far, I am almost completing the construction of my new home and in addition to this, I have added a room to my mother's house. I believe I will get to do more with my next transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I separated from my wife after her family claimed her because I had not paid her dowry. Even though she took my son with her, I still support him. I later moved in with my mother who stays in a single room. Since I cannot share a room with her, during the night, I would sleep at my brother's house. When I got this transfer, I wanted to change all this and have a house of my own. Because I had already started gathering logs to put up a structure, I utilized the money to continue with the construction. I also did not leave my mother's house unattended, so I used the money to improve it by adding a room.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means restoring my dignity that I have lost for long. Currently, I do not have a shelter, lam seeking housing from my relatives something that does not give me a peace of mind. My plan is to use KES 50000 to construct a two-bed house so that I can live a decent life. I will further use KES 40000 to buy 2 indigenous cows for milk production for my household consumption and for sale to an earn extra amount.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the month of October, I realized my dream of owning a place of my own. I have been living on a cousin's land for over 10 years. This was stressing me a lot. In October, I sold 10 sacks of charcoal worth KES 10000. This made me happy because I was able to buy one acre of land. This did not only give me a place to call home but also grant me peace of mind.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a sustainable source of income is the biggest challenge that I am currently facing. I am an unskilled person and getting a good job to sustain all my needs has been a problem for me. The only source of livelihood is charcoal vending, a job that earns me KES 4000 per month which spend on food for my family.
