How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
As at now I have a construction goal that I developed after getting the second transfer. My vision once I get some money is to construct a good spacious house. This is because the one I have is very small and old. It hardly accommodates us more so when we receive visitors.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is an organization that I will live to remember for the support it accorded me. Initially I did not have any defined source of income and things were not working well as expected. If it were not for GiveDirectly my son who is starting his form four national examination tomorrow March 9, 2022 would not have reached that stage; he would have dropped out in the first term of his final year. Again if it were not for GiveDirectly, my form one child would not have joined. I really appreciate the support that I received.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the second transfer money, I first bought three goats for KES 10500.00 as I had earlier told the officers who came at my home. Thereafter, I paid school fees amounting to KES 20000.00 for my form four child. I did some shopping for my form one child as well as paying his school fees though I cannot clearly recall the amount unless I trace the records. After settling the school fees agenda which was the priority, I used the remaining amount in buying some food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was heading to my daily hustle at around 9 AM when my phone started ringing continuously. I was a bit curious since I was not expecting to hear from anyone at that particular time. I then asked one of my daughters to check who could have sent a message. She realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly, they had debited my first transfers into my Mpesa account. I was overwhelmed with joy and I remember saying a special prayer for this miraculous gift from GiveDirectly. I knew that my children will finally go to school like the rest.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfer, I was able to send my two children to school. This has been my biggest challenge considering the fact that I am a single parent and solely depending on casual jobs mostly burning charcoal. I could earn just KES 100 on a good day. This was not enough to pay for their fees and cater to other basic needs like foodstuffs. I have also been depending on the government bursaries and from well-wishers which was not a guarantee. I have been trying to take a loan in microfinance to facilitate their academic journey but I was not granted because I never had any security. Being illiterate, my wish is to see all my children get a good education so that their lives can be better in the future. I however did not lose hope because I was sure God was in control. I am glad they are now in school, courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 15000 of my first transfer on clearing school fees for my daughter who was in her final year in high school. She had been at home for about three weeks because of the huge fee balance. In addition to this, my second daughter was joining high school this year thus I bought a new uniform, stationaries and cleared school fees for her. Actually had I not received the transfer, she could still be at home up to date. Apart from school, I also purchased some building poles at KES 4000 and in order to construct a new house. I paid KES 5000 for the labor cost involved. I am planning to finish the project with the second transfer. I also saved 10000 into my Mpesa account to help me in case of an emergency. I spent the remaining amount on purchasing foodstuffs like maize, beans, sugar, and some other household items that I was lacking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means food security to my house hold.I am single and I rely on selling chapatis at from house to house which earns me very little.I will use Ksh.20,000- of the transfers to build a small cafe in order to have a sustainable remaining amount I will buy one indiginous cows so as to produce milk for my own consumption and the balance pay school fees for my daughter who is in form four.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon. This is because I am at home relaxing after coming from selling my chapatis.Unlike in the morning and evening hours where I do household chores where I get tired.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have ever faced is school fees for my children. This is because earn very little from the chapat vending business.I have been struggling to pay fees and sometimes,my daughter stays at home until when I get money. This has greatly affected her education something that is not pleasant to me.
