How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my life is that l am able to till my farm with ease as compared to before when I had to hire people's oxen which could take too long before they work on my farm and it was also very expensive. Sometime I would go as far as using my own hand to till my farm and that is not the case now. I am now able to plant on time that usually leads to high production, which is always enough to sustain my family for a longer period before next planting season. I also have my own dairy cow that I will get milk from once it has mature and given birth, I will not spend money and more to buy milk as I am doing now.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion my opinion give directly did a very good think by using E-mpesa as a means sending money to the community since it is very convenient and also safe. It was also good dealing with individuals and not a group since it could have brought a lot of conflicts in the community. I did not see anything that GD did not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent most of the transfer to buy an oxen for cultivating my farm and also dairy cow. I thought of buying oxen because I have been having difficult time when it comes to cultivating my farm because I had to use my hands to cultivate it or plead with my friends after they have completed theirs to support me because I have a big piece of land which I can not cultivate a lone. This was normally leading to late poor harvesting that I end up get low yield that can not sustain to the next planting season. Tilling my farm in time has led to getting enough rain thereby leading to high yield. I also bought dairy cow because buying milk everyday from the neighbors is very expensive and I do not have any stable source of income. Once it gives birth I will be able to get milk out of it and I will no longer spend money to buy milk from them again. I also spent the transfer to buy very comfortable furniture being that i did not have something comfortable to sit on. I was sitting on a very old chair that could fall some body down anytime. It was also embarrassing when I have visitors they could lack where to sit on comfortably. Since i bought the seat i am very proud of welcoming visitors in my house comfortably without worrying of where they will sit on. The remaining balance I spent to invest on tree plantation as my future investment since I will selling the trees once they have matured .
