How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year, I hope to start a small grocery business. I intend to sell vegetables such as spinach, tomatoes, potatoes and cabbage around the village. This will be a reliable source of income that will assist me in providing food for the family as well as educating my kids.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in deciding to come up with a direct cash transfer aid in our area. Additionally, making an independent decision on selecting the eligible household without any influence by a political or religious entity was a great thing. I feel everything went on well and their nothing that I feel they could do better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a widow living with 7 children after the death of my spouse one year ago. Life has not been easy since I am jobless and 5 of the kids are still schooling. I spent $150 of the recent transfer to clear all the fees arrears for my children. This is because I had stopped paying their school fee since I used all our savings to nurse my late spouse. At the moment, I am happy that my kids are learning without any challenges. Furthermore, I used all the remaining amount to complete the construction of our two-roomed, mud-walled, iron-roofed house that I started with the first transfer. Previously, I was living in a small one-roomed house with my eight children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home relaxing after coming from the bush where I had gone to collect firewood for sale. It was around 11 o'clock when I received the message notification on my phone. I was with my 5 kids at home, my elder child checked the phone and shared the good news that I had received the transfer from GiveDirectly. I was extremely happy about receiving my transfer which would transform our living standards for the better.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have peace of mind after supporting the education of my children by clearing the fee arrears that they had. In addition, I am optimistic that I will be able to own a house for my family and live without any problems.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a widow of 5 children after my husband died from a strange illness 3 months ago. We had spent all of our savings on the treatment of my husband but he was not able to heal. My kids had a huge fee balances because it was la ong since I paid their school fees. I spent KES 10,000 to clear all the fee arrears for my 5 children who are in primary school. Currently, I am happy that they are learning without any interruption. In addition, I assist the co-wife's child to pay part of the motorbike loan of KES 5000. Also, I spent KES 5000 to purchase sufficient food for my family since I was struggling in feeding them. I used the remaining amount to start the construction of a two-roomed house for my family since I had to relocate to another area due to some family clashes at home. I am planning to use the next transfer to purchase proper bedding since we are currently sleeping on the floor with my 5 children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a widow with 5 children in school and they all depend entirely on my efforts to survive. I have been doing charcoal business for 30 years now and my body has been ruined by this straneous work . Feeding a family of 8 people through this tiresome manual job is a hard activity which no single mother is ready to perform. Receiving this transfers will mark a different point in my life because i will invest much of it in business and goats rearing. I have a dream of owning a retail business - selling maize flour , dried fish and vegetables just here in my house. I will buy goats and keep as a family wealthy and spend afew on beddings and new clothing for my young children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Have struggled throughout in life- I have never got anything to bring joy or happiness. What gives me happiness is the healthy living without any disease but my life is to struggle in order to meet my family's daily needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Hunger is the greatest challenge in my house. Payment of school fees is also a challenge but its very hard for a hungry child to learn well and grasp what is being taught in class if he has an empty stomach.
