Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My happiness is derived from the fact that I was able to acquire household items like bedding and clothes that were lacking at home. I also re-thatched my house that was leaking. These could not have been possible looking at how terrible my past living condition was.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was asleep when the money was sent. However, I was woken up by loud shouts of jubilation from the neighbours who were screaming that the cash transfers had been sent. I was full of joy when I confirmed the mobile money message.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my first cash transfer to purchase a cow worth UGX 800000 and chickens worth UGX 30000. I spent UGX 400000 to hire a piece of farm land. I bought household items like mattress, bedsheets, clothes and utensils all worth UGX 305000. The balance was spent on food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
When I receive this money, I will build a 2 bedroomed house that can comfortably accommodate me with my 2 children. The house we are in apparently is not safe for me and my children but because there is no money, we just have to bear with the situation. But now that GiveDirectly is going to give me a cash gift, I see this as a golden opportunity to acquire a good shelter for my children. I will also rent agricultural because when I returned home my father gave me a very small piece of land to do agriculture. With the rented land, I will expand my agricultural practices so that I get better yields and sell so that I get some income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am sure my children and I have had atleast 2 meals a day. This is the time I am also resting after doing the day's work.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of money to sustain my family. I am forced to do casual labouring in order to get some money to buy my children food but its not easy because I am payed little money and attimes going without money.
