How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I have always wanted to get money to pay school fees for my school children. I also have a goal of buying livestock of my own. It has been a longtime dream for me to own livestock of myself. I also have a goal of buying land that I will call home and where I can engage in farming.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well in terms of helping every vulnerable household without having any instances of biasness. With that many people within our village and even other villages can benefit from the help and also those who truly require the help can benefit.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the money in buying 25 iron sheets, poles, pieces of timber, nails and some cash to pay the mason. I wanted to buy land with the cash but unfortunately the land was way too expensive. Instead I opted to repair the house that I was living in to be in a better condition so that me and my family will fit and live in it comfortable. I also used a portion of the money to pay school fees for my children who are in school. I also bought some three goats for myself. I am now happy that I have livestock and also my children are in school with no school fees arears.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still vividly recall just like yesterday at around 9 AM when I was just from the dam when I heard some continuous vibrations from my mobile phones. I decided to rush to my neighbor who is my helper to check what the notifications were all about. Upon checking, she confirmed that it was an Mpesa message from Segovia Technology. I had finally received my cash transfer, I was so happy for I knew, finally, I would be able to clear the fees arrears for my five children. I will forever be grateful to GiveDirectly for coming into my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I received assistance from Give Directly is that I was able to clear school fees for my five children; one is in high school and the other four are in primary school. Paying school fees has been my biggest challenge for years. I was worried that my eldest child who is now in college will drop out of school because I couldn't afford it. I had stretched all my sources but nothing was working out. My spouse passed on ten years ago and living without him has never been easy. I promised myself that I would make him proud by working hard and providing for our children. I have been struggling all these years to make both ends meet. I normally rely on casual jobs such as tilling other people's farms and in a day I could earn approximately KES 300. Although it's not enough to settle all my bills it keeps us moving. I have walked in all government offices requesting bursaries but I have not been lucky all this while. My children's education greatly affected as they could be often be chased out of school and this made me feel like a loser. I was failing my children as a parent. My third-born opted to drop out of school because he felt I was straining but I normally motivate them and am glad none of them dropped out of school. I am so happy that now this has been fully sorted. I no longer lose sleep thinking about how I will educate my children. I was able to plan and found a permanent solution for my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying loive4stock more so aq dairy cow at KES 15000 and a goat at KES 3500 respectively. This is what I have been yearning to keep in my compound but I couldn't afford it because of financial difficulties. I am now hopeful and happier because at least I can rely on them in case of any emergency. Also, I cleared school fees for my daughter who is in her third year in secondary school. Later on, I bought new school uniforms, stationery, and clearing fees for my other four children who are still in primary schools. To add to that, my current house is very small, therefore, I opted to buy building poles, nails, and threads at (KES 5000 )with an am of renovating it by adding an extra room. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family that would sustain us for at least two weeks.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a widow with a family of 6 children and raising them has been so difficult because I mostly depend on casual jobs to get money for our upkeep. Most of the time I cultivate other people's land to get money which is at most Ksh.300 a day. I have 4 children who are attending school; one in form three and three in primary school. Since I have no stable source of income to support them, they have been surviving through bursaries which in most cases are not reliable. Sometimes they are sent away from school due to lack of school fees. Receiving this money means good education for my children since I will have the opportunity to pay for their fees. I will use the first transfer to buy three cows that will cost me around Ksh.50,000 to act as my store of wealth. This will help me to settle their fees once they advance their studies. With the reaming amount, it will help me to purchase one acre of land for subsistence farming because the land I currently use is not productive.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the afternoon because I usually get the opportunity to cook the first meal for my children. This gives me the feeling of happiness since my children usually enjoy the meal. Unlike in the morning when I get stressed up because I had to go and work in my neighbour's farm in order to get an income to buy food.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Imagine being a widow and the only breadwinner for my family of 7, it has been a very difficult life to me since in most cases I fail to provide some of our basic needs like food and better education for the children. I usually depend on casual jobs to earn me $3 per day and this cannot sustain our needs. Therefore, the lack of a reliable source of income is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life
