How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes I have a new goal of paying school fees for my three children who are in secondary, college, and university respectively. When I received my first and second transfer I was able to clear their arears and I remained with a little amount of money that helped me boost my small restaurant business that I run at a nearby centre. Initially I used to make at least KES 500 per day from this business an amount that would provide me with just enough to buy food for my children and nothing at all to save. I am happy that with the boost that I received from GiveDirectly I now make up to KES 1500 per day which is way too much and enought to save and be able to pursue other needful investments for my family. I am a single mother of three and my priority right now is to see to it that my three children will be able to clear their education without much difficulties. I know for sure that I will be able to accomplish this goal with the booming restaurant business that I currently run. All these is because of GiveDirectly and I am so grateful for it.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did well in giving us the money unconditionally and without bias. This gave people like me the freedom to use the money in businessgenerating activies and brought a total change in our lives. We are excited as a family that we will be able to enjoy the results of this aid going forward. On the other hand I only got concerned that a huge lot of single people were left behind without enrollment.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 20000 to pay school fees for my three children who are in various schools and used another KES 30000 to build two of my children a house they will be sleeping in whenever they are home. The remaining amount of money helped me improve my business. I chose to pay school fees since I had strained a lot before receiving these transfers and had huge school fees arears as well in school. I am now a happy and more relaxed mother knowing better that I have paid one term ahead for all my three children. It has been a struggle paying their school fees now that I am a single mother and the small restaurant business that I run has been giving us very little amount of money daily. too little to even save for payment of school fees. I am however happy that with the boost from GiveDirectly we will be able to pay their school fees and give them an easy time in school.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 11:30 pm and I had gone to sleep. I was not deep in sleep since I could still hear a few noises here in there. Suddenly, my phone rang notifying me of a new message. I decided to check it and I could not believe it when I read the SMS which was bearing the good news of having received the promised transfer from GiveDirectly. I was so happy upon seeing this that I lost my sleep. I thanked God and GiveDirectly for blessing me with such a huge sum of money that I had never received before.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. I was able to clear the big school fees arrears that I still had for my two children. I didn't know where I was going to get the money to do so but I thank GiveDirectly for the help that they gave me. My children can now relax and study well without worrying about being sent home for the rest of the academic year.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer money on paying school fees for my two children and improving my business. I spent KES 21000 on clearing the huge school fees arrears that I had. I also spent KES 3000 on buying a pressure cooker and KES 15000 on constructing a shade for the hotel. The remaining amount, I used in buying foodstuffs for my family, that is, maize and rice. The construction of the shade and buying the pressure cooker for the hotel business was my biggest aim upon receiving the transfer. I wanted to buy the pressure cooker so that I could prepare some of the foods that take too long to cook faster. I have been sleeping late waiting for the food to cook. I also wanted to build the shade so that my customers can have a nice place to relax and take their food without worrying about being rained on. I was not able to do the above as I had wished for because I didn't have the money to do so. The money that I was making from my hotel business most of it used to go to the purchase of food and payment of school fees for my two children. I have hence not had enough to save up. With having bought the pressure cooker, I no longer sleep late like before. My customers are able to relax well and take their food upon building the shade. I am hence so much grateful to GiveDirectly for their support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a businesswoman who runs a small hotel in Siongiroi town. I serve tea, soured milk, and githeri (traditional meal of maize and beans boiled together). As small as this business is, I comfortably make a profit of KES 300 every single day. This helps me cater for my daily needs such as maize flour, cooking fat, and vegetables. I love this job because it is not only easy for me but a good way of employing myself. My current stall can only accommodate four customers at ago and I plan to expand it to at least 10. I will use KES 10,000 to buy iron sheets and poles to expand my stall and another KES 3000 to buy a pressure cooker to reduce the time I take cooking. Receiving this money will be a new beginning for my business because I am sure I will reap more profits out of it.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite all the predicament my children are going through in their school, they still emerge top in their respective classes. Last term, for instance, they brought home impressive results. Apart from being position 1, they scored good grades and I look forward to them joining good universities in this country and that is my source of happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Raising my children's school fees is one of the biggest challenges I have at the moment. My husband stays in Nairobi and comes home once a year. I bear this burden alone because for him school for his children is not that important. I have 2 sons who are in Siongiroi day secondary school, and I pay KES 30000 each year. I have arrears amounting to KES 23000 that have accrued from last year. This has caused my children to be sent away from school on many occasions and therefore not giving them enough time to study as their counterparts.
