How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am glad that the second transfer I got from GiveDirecly, which I paid for with money I had saved up, enabled me to buy a small plot of land on which to build a new home for my family of three. I am hoping to gather sufficient building supplies soon to help my family build a new home on the new plot of land. The surplus product will allow me to cover my older child's third-grade tuition. I will also be leasing another piece of land to farm on and ensuring that there is enough food for my two children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am grateful that GiveDirectly introduced a new project that provided us with financial assistance and the freedom to manage our spending according to our goals as a family. With the money that would be a free cash transfer, everyone in the community was eager to improve the quality of life in their homes. Even though we were initially skeptical and believed we were being duped into applying for a loan, the GiveDirectly staff did an excellent job of explaining the process and providing us with clear information on the help. GiveDirectly should carry on the amazing work they have been doing in the areas they have yet to serve with the same clarity in sharing information.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been residing in a separate house that was given to me by my parents on their land ever since I gave birth to my first child eight years ago. Since I could not receive any support from my parents, who worked tirelessly to provide for my other three siblings, I have been working hard to support my two children. Now that he is a grownup, our youngest brother needs a spot on the property so he may build a house as well. My parents have been advising me to start looking for a plot of land where I can build a house for my kids for the past six months. I was happy to receive the first and second transfers since they gave me hope for a fresh start in a new place. Despite the fact that I had a lot on my plate, I am delighted I utilized the entire second transfer to purchase a quarter-acre plot of land in the area that was on the offer for $600. I had to add the transfer with savings before making a single payment to cover the entire cost of the land. Before leaving the present house for my brother to demolish and build a new one for himself, I am hoping to soon be able to acquire all the materials needed to build a new one.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was my first time receiving KES 55000 on my phone. When I confirmed that I had received such an amount, my heart was full of joy. I knew that money would help me transform my life. I work as a teacher and I was saving towards buying a dairy cow since I have been spending a lot on buying milk.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have been buying milk for quite some time and this was very costly. I couldn't afford to buy a cow before because my income wasn't enough to save and buy necessities for my family. After buying the dairy cow, I saved approximately KES 100 a day which I would have spent on buying milk. The same amount now, I can direct to paying school fees for my child. Having a dairy cow at this time is the biggest difference in my life as I had no hope that I would buy it anytime soon.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving my transfer, my main focus was on buying a dairy cow so that I can bring to an end the daily cost of buying milk for use at home. I spent KES 42500 on buying a lactating dairy cow. I am glad that we can have milk now. The remaining amount, I spent on buying foodstuffs for my family and some clothes for myself and my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Since I am not married,I live on my parent's land with my three children. The house I stay in is very small and acts as sleeping, living and a kitchen. During the rainy season it is uncomfortable to sleep due to the porous roof which makes it cold and exposes the children to diseases such as flu and pneumonia. As a result the children sometimes sleep at their grandmothers house. My ambition is to use the first transfers to purchase a piece of land and later build a two-roomed house with the second transfers. I am happy to know that my life and that of my children will change since we will be able to sleep comfortably and host visitors.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Five months ago, I secured a job at a local primary school. Even though it is on casual terms, I am assured of earnings at the end of the month. This brought me happiness because I can be able to meet the basic needs for my family and other necessities. Previously ,I used to work at people's farms or borrow from my parents in order to feed my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am an Early Childhood Development teacher at a local primary school but I am employed on casual terms. The lack of a stable job is a challenge because I raise my children single-handedly. I earn KES 3,500 per month which I use to purchase food and pay for school levies. Depending on table banking loans is the norm for me to make ends meet. This could have been different with a good source of income.
