How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My ambition is to start a poultry project which would be more sustainable. Though, this has not been realised before over the years due to financial constraints. To accomplish this, I plan on saving money from my business every month to start the project in bits. I am so grateful for the great opportunity that the organization gave us to uplift our lives.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the support from GiveDirectly not only improved our lives but also that of the most vulnerable residents of our community. There is no doubt about the organization's impact on our community. Most of us had our living status upgraded as a result. We saw no irregularities in any of the locations where the organization worked near our areas, and they did an outstanding job there.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving money from GiveDirectly was the happiest thing and a magnificent gift from God. This is because it came at the right time of need when I needed to pay school fees for my two children in secondary school. I am married and blessed with seven children. My husband is mentally challenged living him vulnerable and making me the sole breadwinner. I depend on farming and selling tomatoes to make ends meet. Upon receiving my transfer, I paid school fees of $200 for my children. Thereafter, I bought foodstuffs and replaced my children's wardrobe with more decent clothes because the ones that they had were old. The support from GiveDirectly has brought so much love and happiness and uplifted my living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. It was around 7:00 pm when I heard my phone ring and upon checking, I confirmed to that the message was from GiveDirectly. I immediately informed my children who were equally very happy to hear the good news. What made me happy was the thought that I was finally going to be able to accomplish the things that I had thought would take me longer time to be able to accomplish.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having bought food in bulk has meant that I am now able to save up on some of the money that I would have already used to buy foodstuffs for my family. Some of the agricultural produce that I would have sold out already are still there and I am looking forward to making even more savings going forward to be able to make other valuable investments. Ordinarily, I would be forced to engage in casual labour to make extra income that would allow me meet the cost of other basic needs of my family but right now I feel more relieved and I even have time to relax at home contrary to before when I would have to go out there and engage in casual work for long hours.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 25000 to buy a dairy cow and used another KES 10000 to pay school fees for my child who had just been sent home for school fees. Another KES 10000 was used to buy food for the family while the remainder was used to buy clothes and other needs for my children and family. For a long time we did not own any form of livestock in our compound. This was so because the small agribusiness that I engaged in would provide us with just enough income to feed the family and maybe pay school fees albeit with some degree of struggle. I am a mother of seven children with three of them being in their secondary school level of education and paying school fees for my children have proven to be a toll order. I feel happy and lucky to have received the transfer from GiveDirectly since it enabled me accomplish things that I would have been forced to postpone until further notice. My husband too is differently abled and therefore most of the things that require money are all dependent on me.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We are a family from a community that values cattle as a source of livelihood (especially by consuming milk), prestige, and a means of accumulating wealth. We have struggled in vain to buy one. This has been a source of frustration in our household because we usually purchase milk for consumption daily and we feel more vulnerable (we have no livestock to sell in case of any financial pressures) by not owning a cow. As such, receiving this money means we shall acquire a cow using about KES 30, 000. Thank you GiveDirectly for this grant.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Five months ago, I got the right treatment and got healed from ulcers that had affected me for some years. I attained some financial support from a well-wisher, hence, affordable to seek the medication. In that sense, getting healed has been the main source of happiness for me since I am more productive when in good health.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband's mental disorder serves as the biggest challenge that I am currently facing. This is because the ailment has rendered him economically unproductive. As such, I am the only breadwinner for my family of 9. As a peasant farmer, sustaining my family without the support of my husband has been tough.
