How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
It has been a dream of mine to own my own house since I was little but could not do much as I was not able to earn enough to build. When this money came in that was my number one goal. I set out to find construction workers in the village and got to work. After years of sleeping in my brother's houses moving from one homestead to another, it was finally time to have my own. I have also wanted to pay my children's school fees without struggling and for them not to miss class. This was also possible thanks to Give directly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give directly has no one thing wrong with its projects to its people. I am very thankful to them for including me in this program and giving me some financial stability and a comfortable home that would have not been possible during this pandemic.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had already started building my house and was not done yet when the second transfer came in. It came just in time as I needed to buy the roofing materials and also to find the construction worker who also needed to be paid to finish up the roof. So when the money came in I divided it to cater to the materials and the laborer's pay. Once done the little left I was able to buy beds which was a nice change from sleeping on the floor.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My job as a donuts vendor requires me to wake up early at 3 am to prepare and cook them. At around 7 o'clock l am always set to start walking around the village selling the donuts to my customers. I had just arrived from the vending my products when I received a message alert on the phone. Upon checking the Mpesa account I realized that I had received the transfer. I was extremely happy for receiving the aid since I had eagerly waited for the aid since the day GiveDirectly officers enrolled me into the program.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am living a comfortable life after building a decent shelter for my family. This has increased my self-esteem since I am no longer fearful about my house that was collapsing. I thank GiveDirectly for the financial support that has helped me put up a new house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 35,000 of my transfer to construct a decent shelter for my family. This is because my house was about to collapse and it was risky for my family member. I have desired to build a new house but due to lack of enough money to acquire the building materials. I was not able to fulfill this dream because my job of selling donuts around the village earn me utmost KES 150 per day which was not enough. I normally spent the income from my job on feeding my family of 3 members remaining with nothing for the other needs. In addition, I bought proper beddings for KES 6400, initial I was using a worn-out one that was not comfortable to use. I also spent 3000 to clear my kid's fee arrears they were often sent home due to the fee balances. I purchased enough foodstuff with the remaining amount of money.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means food security and self-employment for me. I currently do my farming on my half an acre piece of land. The farm gives me a maximum of 90 kilograms of maize per farming season, which only sustains my family.Once I receive the money, I will purchase a two acre of land, where I will be producing approximately 8 bags of 90 kilograms in a farming season. I will be selling the surplus thus getting income to cater for my other family's needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the afternoon. This is the time I get to rest after having worked for hours from morning. It is also the time my son comes back home from school and I get a chance to enjoy an afternoon meal with him.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of money to buy food is my biggest challenge I face. The maize produce I get from my piece of land is not enough to take through the year together with my family of two children. Sometimes I am forced to do hard casual work to get money which I use to buy food.
