How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Having bought a dairy cow recently using my second transfer, my aim at the moment is to plant some feeds in a section of my farm. With this, I will have a constant supply of milk even during the dry season since my livestock will be having enough feeds. In addition, I will be able to earn money from the sale of surplus and use it to cater to our basic needs and in case of an emergency.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
When GiveDirectly promised that they would give us financial aid, I knew that I would never get the full amount promised if they were to use our local leaders to distribute the cash. When they sent it via Mpesa, I became happy and I can confidently say that they did well by choosing to use mobile transfers since the money reaches the intended people and I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Buying milk has been my routine and with the recent drought that we have been experiencing in my region, the prices of milk have gone high. As a subsistence farmer, money from the sale of eggs has been of great importance to me in meeting our basic needs though it has made my poultry project not to grow. As a way of reducing our expenditure in the future, I decided to spend KES 40000 on the purchase of a dairy cow. Also, I spent KES 12000 to fence my farm to avoid my crops from being destroyed by livestock whenever I am not at home and spent KES 2700 on food and a pair of clothes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the money I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9am. I was on my farm digging, When I heard a message tone from my phone. I called my daughter to check it for me. She told me that it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money before. My family members celebrated the good news. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. I depend on small scale farming and the amount of money that I get through this is so small and it's only for household basic needs. I do not have a continuous source of income apart from the poutry keeping project. Currently I have enough milk for my family and I sell the rest to earn an income to meet other household need. I no longer get worried on where to get the money to buy the milk. I have devoted much of time on this amazing dairy project and poultry keeping. This two gives me hope and strength to walk up and do my daily work nicely.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 35,000 to purchase a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and it was so costly for me. I bought the building materials and build a poultry house. This has ease the poetry work that I do. The rest of the money I bought clothes and food for the family. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means i will be able to buy a cow. I have one but cannot sustain my needs. When i get this money i want to buy feeds for my cows. This cow will cost around 400 dollars. This means i will get extra milk for selling thus generating more income. To buy cows feeds i need to buy seeds for planting. It cost around 20 dollars. 200 dollars will go to ploughing. The remaining amount i will use for my personal needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon. This is the time i interact with my neighbors. I even forget the problem i had when iam with them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been financial constraints. My son was studying medical course in Machakos and since iam a single mother getting money was a challenge. I went into debt because of that. Even though he has cleared school i am still struggling to clear this debts.
