How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I really wanted to use the funds to repair my husband's car because he was a taxi driver and also I wanted to use the funds to invest into my business so it could bring me more income and give me more profit in order to help me sustain my family better.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I most definitely lean more on the fact that the organization is doing a great job, especially because since I received the funds my husband has gone back to work and I've been able to sustain my business and most importantly my kids have been able to stay in school.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As soon as I receivedthe funds I went ahead and used KES 10,000 to help in repairing my husband's car so that he could go back to using it as a taxi, I also used KES 10,000 which helped me retain my restaurant business because I'd mentioned that I ran small business, and then I proceeded to use KES 10,000 to pay tuition fee for my daughter who is still in primary school. Meanwhile for the rest of the funds I used gradually for the purpose of nutrition for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7:45 am. I was checking my phone as usually in the morning. When I got the message indicating that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I have never received such amount of money before. I inform my spouse and he was so happy too. We immediately plan on how to spend the money I stayed for three days and went to withdrew the money. I knew I would be able to add stock to my business of fast food distribution. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that my spouse has successfully completed processing his traveling document. He had secured a job outside the country and the main challenge was the money to process the documents that was needed. He was at ease and everything went out smoothly. He is planning to traveling next week. We do small business at home and this is our main source of income. We did not know where to get the KES 20,000 and we were so worried. We were to sell some of our assets. We are so grateful because all our businesses is running well and we did not sold Any asset. I will be the one running this business when my spouse is outside the country. GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 5,000 to repair my motorcycle. We have a motorcycle which we use it for taxi. I am so grateful because now it's working well. I took 15700 to purchase more stock to my small business of fast food distribution. I had started this business but the stock had reduce since I had taken some money to purchase some of the household items. I used some amount to purchase food and clothes for my children. My spouse has secured a better job outside the country and he was preparing some of the necessary documents. He took KES 20,000 to spend on those processes. Everything is now ready and ready to leave the country next week. I saved the remaining money for household items. I am so grateful for the support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Recently I have noticed that my the building materials used to construct my house are all eaten by Ants, so time to time I have to call a mason to make repairs which is very costly, I spend almost KSH 800 every week because that's all I can afford to make partial repairs. Upon receiving the first transfer of KSH 55000 I plan to do all repairs, especially all the walls and this will cost around for all building materials KSH 25000 and a labour charge of KSH 5000. The rest of the transfer which is around Ksh 20,000 I will expand my business, where I sell sweet potato fries in Schools.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I and my husband took a loan during the covid period, to buy small motor bike(Tuktuk)and business was very bad by then, we had lot of pressures from the loan agents But am glad we finished paying loan that was amounting to KSH100,000 in January, that was my greatest joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently I have personal problems, I have a daughter who is aged 12 and it's been tough to get a second child, and when I visited a gynaecologist, I was diagnosed with secondary fertility. I spend every Penny to ensure I get healed and I can say am not mentally okay and I feel different from my rest of the family.
