How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Owning a dairy cow and four goats is the biggest difference in my daily life. In my community livestock is greatly valued. It is usually seen as a source of wealth since once they reproduce over a short period of time. These livestock will come in handy in the foreseen future most especially to cater for my children's education after selling part of them . Meanwhile, we will continue enjoying the milk from the cow.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion , GiveDirectly did very well in giving out donations in form of money since there has been improvement in my living standards especially for myself as I have gotten an opportunity to pay school fees and acquire livestock that I did not anticipate to have at this time . Personally , I do not see anything bad that GiveDirectly did on its work.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second to buy two goats 5000 KES and having these goats is an achievement because they will reproduce and increase in number. I know with time, I have a herd full of goats that I can decide to sell whenever an emergency occurs. I paid part of my child's school fees for next year . I bought timbers 3000 KES . With the remaining amount it catered for my child's medical bills and saved the rest on my Mpesa account .

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Having a dairy cow has really made my life to be so different in many ways. Since I am in a polygamous marriage and being the fourth wife, my children are still young and our husband is grown old. I had to look for a few assets that would help me generate income. This is the main reason I bought the dairy cow and a goat. I believe the money will help me in schooling my children and meet other basic needs. I am so grateful to be among the beneficiaries of GiveDirectly.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 3 am when I heard my phone vibrating. It was unusual for my phone to ring at that time. I decided to check what the message was all about. At first, I thought it was an emergency message and thought that someone was in danger. I later realized it was an mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy knowing I will achieve a lot and develop my self out of this money.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my transfer to buying a dairy cow and a goat. In my village, these were the asset that was highly valued because they reproduce within a short period of time and they can also survive in different climatic conditions. Apart from that I also bought a few building materials. The previous house was very small yet we were four wives living in the same house. I used to feel uncomfortable due to the congestion and lack of privacy. Our children used to sleep at my neighbor's houses which were very inconveniencing. I also paid school fees for my children because they had stayed home for a while due to a lack of school fees. Since my spouse is very old I had to take care of everything. I finally spent the remaining amount of money to buy foodstuffs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Starting a food vending business has been my greatest ambition in life. As at today, I am engaged in casual work of fetching water and washing dishes for some hotels in order to get an income for my family's upkeep. Considering the nature of my job being temporary and low paying, I am forced to live a miserable life that has subjected me to ridicule. With the help of the transfers, I plan to reshape my life for the better since I will be able to start my own business which will be my reliable source of income. This will change the livelihood of my family, a life that I have longed for.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The evening is the happiest part of my day since I get enough time to rest and share our meals with my children. Morning and afternoon are always busy hours for me because I spend them searching for jobs and work when I get. Since these activities are strenuous, they make me weak and tired something that makes my day tiresome.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our household is polygamous with a family size of fifteen members. Considering that our husband is old and jobless, we face a lot of challenges in meeting our daily basic needs. This has forced me to do casual jobs in order to feed my children. Therefore, I consider the lack of a reliable source of income as my biggest hardship.
