How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life long dream would be expanding my business into a much larger outfit. I make a living primarily from buying fruits at Bamba and selling them at Kasimbijini at my little kibanda. The plan is to one day grow it into a walk in grocery store. The likes of which I have seen in town, with shelves, a till and a wide selection of all veggies that one would need. That's my plan.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
All I really have to say on this is how much GiveDirectly help people change their lives, by achieving their dreams. The financially power that GiveDirectly gives to its recipients is like nothing g else I have witnessed amongst NGOs or any other entity that assists the less fortunate. The only thing they can improve on is maybe increasing the number of people they reach since there are still so many who do not know of GiveDirectly, but are in dire need of their assistance.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The funds from GiveDirectly ticked off quite a few things on the proverbial to-do list. I set off by buying land at Kasimbijini, Palakumi, at a cost of Kes. 35,000 (which I intend to farm and grow maize, coconuts and cassava for sale and consumption as well), proceeded to invest in a few livestock in the form of 2 goats( a male and a female, of which is pregnant already and whose offspring will fetch enough to pay for school fees, which will be a good return, considering they set me back Kes. 5,000 each) and the rest went to buying uniforms for my three kids who are in Grade 5, Grade 1 and PP1( all go to Godoi Primary, where Kes. 750 per term for the lot.) GiveDirectly allowed me to accomplish a lot, and I will eternally be great full to them, for the same.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
We were very happy with my husband and children when we received a message from GiveDirectly that confirmed the receipt of the first transfer. It was around 4:00 pm when we got the news and since we had all the plans in place; we had no hurry collecting it till the next day when we were making our first purchases. Before then, it filled everyone in the household with joy and could not forget to thank GiveDirectly for the generous support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my household is the complete change in our living conditions after constructing a new house and new bedding has given us better nights compared to the past. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for this support that has transformed and improved our living standards. I hope that the second transfer will help us more with other incomplete projects.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We had been wallowing in poverty for many years and the entry of GiveDirectly into our village was a blessing to my family. It revived my hope of starting it again and making my dreams come true. I spent KES 35000 on the construction of a new house after buying 23 iron sheets and other construction materials. Previously, everyone in my family of five was sleeping on the floor of the old building, but after the construction of a new house, I saw it was good to spend KES 7450 on a new bed and bedding for my children. Everyone is now happy and can sleep well in a more spacious house. I also obtained new pairs of school uniforms for my three children at KES 1500 and used the remaining amount on buying foodstuff for my household.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Looking at how tough the economic situation is in the country, I have women up to the realization that one needs more than one income to survive. As my husband toils in his casual jobs, I will use this one to open a small eatery within the village. What remains of the transfers I will buy a bed and mattress so that our nights be a bit more comfortable than they are now. It will be a welcome upgrade.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am grateful that my family is alive and well. We appreciate good health and the gift of life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband does not get as many casual jobs as he used to. The income cannot sustain the entire family. My prayer is that I will be able to start a business that will add to whatever he provides.
