How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next one year, I am hoping to have saved enough money in a year to go back to school so I can figure out how to support my family financially since my child will be old enough to start school and I don't want to put her off.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly does a good job of ensuring that the process of aiding the poor is fair and open, ensuring that no one is left out and that no one is mistreated during the process.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With my second transfer, I spent Ksh 10,000 on supplies for my three-year-old and myself, including enough food and clothing to last at least a month. This gave me the freedom to pursue other interests. I'll be waiting for the KSH 26600 my husband borrowed, which he said he would use and then return, so I may use it, together with the KSH 7000 I've already saved, to enroll in college, where I intend to pursue a career in beauty.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The receipt of a message from GiveDirectly confirming the receipt of my first transfer was the happiest moment for me and my family. We had been waiting for the transfer for a month after enrolling, but there was no clarity on the specific dates. Even though I was at home with my children, I couldn't tell them anything until the second day, when I called my husband and told him, as well as my children, the good news. We all rejoiced and thanked God for the fulfillment of GiveDirectly's promise.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I used to have a small house that served as both a kitchen and a living room. The space was too small for my large family of 12, but thanks to GiveDirectly for the first transfer, I was able to build a new house, which has made a significant difference in my daily life. After converting the old house into a kitchen, we now have a better space with a separate kitchen. I am grateful for the support and looking forward to starting other new projects with the second transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used a portion of my first transfer to build a new house after purchasing 22 iron sheets for $10 each, paying $50 to the contractor who raised the walls, and purchasing nails and wood to complete the entire house's construction. We had been living in a single house with my large family of 12, so building a new house with more space has been a huge relief for us. I also purchased two goats for $35 each, intending to breed and sell the offspring when they reproduce. In addition, when I was admitted, I paid $50 to the hospital to cover my medical bill and saved the remainder, which I have been using to buy food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am planning to use KES 50,000 from the GiveDirectly transfers to construct a two bedroom house for my family of three. The grass-thatched house I currently reside in is in a pathetic condition and the roof is leaking. Sleeping and this roof while it's raining is even more problematic. With a two bedroom house, my family will be assured of enough and a comfortable sleeping space. I will use a further KES 10,000 to enroll for a tailoring course in the nearest vocational training institution. Doing all this will make me a happy woman.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am always happy during the sunny days because I am sure I will not be inconvenienced by anything in relation to the pathetic condition of my house.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The pathetic condition of my house has denied me peace for long. Sleeping under this roof is risky given that it is leaking whenever it rains endangering my life and the life of my 2 years old daughter.
