How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My ambition is to grow my company. Expand it into a wholesale operation where people can come and buy various wares in bulk. An increase in the size of my company would imply an increase in my income. This would allow me to realize my long-term goal of providing a better life for my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has made it their mission to identify those in need of help and to provide that help. I've seen water tanks, kids going to school, cattle being purchased, and so on all around my village, thanks to GiveDirectly. In countless ways, they have made many people's dreams come true.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I own a store where I sell raw and fried fish, kale, cabbage, and other groceries. GiveDirectly funds enabled me to expand my business. I was able to buy more stock, improve the interior and exterior design, and much more. The business allows me to supplement my husband's income as a security guard at Mwembe in Mombasa. What we produce helps to support both of us as well as our two children. I also prioritized purchasing food for our household, as the 1.5 acres on which we grow maize and other cereals have been left bare by the drought. The majority of the funds were used to improve our home. For a while, it required attention, but we lacked the resources to cater to them, you must have disposable funds. We were able to realize our dream thanks to GiveDirectly. Our children are 2.5 years and 10 months old, respectively, and these funds enabled us to save some money on the side to take the children to school when they start.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I went to collect the firewood and when I went back home I got a message from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes it was a message confirming that I have received some money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. My grandmother was at home she received the transfer as well. We all celebrated the good news. I stayed for one-day planning and later went to withdraw the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Building two shops are the biggest difference in my daily life. This was my main concern since I have always wanted to do a good business and own some shopping premises. I found small-scale farming and business groceries. This would earn me a small income and I was not able to save some money to buy the building materials. When I received the transfer from GiveADirectly I was able to purchase the timber and iron sheets. I started the construction and now it is almost done. I have built two spacious shops and I want to use them for my business and rent out the out to earn some income for the family. I am waiting for the second transfer to complete the construction process and start using the shops. GiveDirectly has enabled me to fulfill my dream.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 45,000 on purchasing building materials and building two shops for business. I have always wanted to do this but I did not have the money. The construction is almost complete and I will use one shop and rent out the other one to get some income. The rest of the money I spent on food and household items. I am grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a small piece of land at a nearby market center. My plan has always been to build rental houses on that land but unfortunately, lack of money has not made this possible. I felt like I failed myself by not working hard enough to fulfill my dream and this is why I want to privatize building these houses because the people I target are teachers who teach at a nearby primary school. All of my transfers will go to this project since it has the potential of bringing me good returns. Therefore receiving this money will finally give me financial freedom when people start to rent houses.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I gave birth to a bouncing baby girl three weeks ago. Giving birth, especially to a girl brought me joy and happiness in my life because that has been always my prayer.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I had some cash that I used to buy a piece of land at a nearby market center and my main agenda was to put up rental houses targeting teachers who teach at a nearby primary school. Unfortunately, lack of capital has hindered me from fulfilling my dream and this has made me frustrated. I felt like I wasted the money I used to buy the piece of land because it has not given me any returns and I cannot use it for farming because of the drought too.
