How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Even though I have a lot of goals for this year, I am limited by finances and may not be able to complete them all in a timely manner. At the moment, I am concentrating my efforts on purchasing a large water storage facility that will be useful in collecting rainwater and storing it for use during dry seasons. I am currently running a small egg selling business, with a portion of the proceeds going into a savings account for future projects. I also do subsistence farming, and I believe that the surplus from the harvest will help me save money for a water tank.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Everyone was excited about the project, as evidenced by their commitment to making good decisions that would transform their families. GiveDirectly's team that came to our village did an outstanding job of making sure that every member of our village was visited in their home for a better understanding of the project. We appreciate the hard work and the help that came when we needed it the most. I have no complaints about the approach, nor have I heard anyone complain about it, but we hope that the same project will be implemented in other villages.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the first transfer, I began paying for a piece of land, but I was unable to pay the full amount due to other obligations. I cleared the pending $150 for the piece of land that I was relieved to be granted after completing the payment when I received the second transfer. I also purchased a $200 heifer to add to the only dairy cow I already had on my farm. I plan to keep the two, breed them, and when they reproduce, I will have extra liters of milk and may consider selling the offspring to cover other household expenses. I also had a new house at the time, but I had not finished furnishing it or purchasing furniture. I then spent $150 on a three-seat sofa set, two tables, and cushions for the chairs to make them more comfortable. My house is currently looking really good, which has boosted my confidence even when visitors arrive. In addition, I used the remaining funds to purchase food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My daughter came to the field looking all happy and excited, I was at the field looking after my animals' grazing, upon asking her what was behind the cheerful look, that was when she broke the news that I had received the promised transfer, it was a day like no other, I was so happy because I knew that God had finally answered our prayers, we then went back home to embark on planning on how we would cash out the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to accomplish my dreams in a short period, I can comfortably enjoy my meals because the seats are new and the house is decent now, I am grateful to the organization for putting smiles in our faces and for transforming our living standard to a higher one.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I enjoy looking after the animals at my age, this is the only activity that I can do at ease, I am too weak to go to the farm, upon receiving my transfer I thought of building a decent house, this is because I only had one house which was also small, thus I used KES 30,000, I then bought sofa sets seats at KES 10,000, and lastly I used the remaining amount of money in buying foodstuffs, I am happy that I was able to spend the money wisely.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means guaranteed ownership of a parcel of land. This is because I shall have the title deed for the land after settling a debt of KES 49500.I bought 0.75 acres of land in the past 4 years from the savings accrued from my farm. After the decline in production from the farm I have been unable to save any money. This resulted in me defaulting in payment for the piece of land since I depended on the farm produce to settle the land payment. This money will enable me to settle the debt and finally have the legal process of land ownership transferred to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The condition of maize crops on my farm has given me joy in the past 3 months. The crops are healthy this year and have not shown any signs of pest and disease attack as was last year this season. This condition assures me of food security throughout next year because I foresee a good harvest in February next year.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of capital and inadequate food are the challenges am currently facing. I am a widow of 5 who solely depends on farming as a main economic activity.Agriculture has been affected by pest and diseases, drought and poor seed quality. As a result the yields from crops and livestock have been declining in the past year.Because of these challenges I have sold out most of my livestock in order to afford school fee payments as well as household needs such as food . The harvest we get after a long time of toiling and moiling can only sustain us for a short period of time . With the little incomes I earn from selling eggs I can purchase some household items .This is usually KES 120 a day and is limited as compared to the daily needs of my family .
