How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference is that I now have livestock that I would not have owned if it were not to GD's transfers. I count this as a milestone in my life that has taken the support of GD. Besides that, I have been able to keep my children in school with zero fee balances. I would not have managed because my casual job does not get me enough money for all that I was able to do with GD's unconditional transfers. My life has been elevated and we are a happy family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
we were never expecting to receive any money from GD even after the promise to send because in our minds we were convinced that there is no way that someone can send you money without you doing anything just like that. But to our surprise, GD did send unconditional transfers and it has changed the standard of our village. This is remarkable and there is no better way than what GD did.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
When I received my transfers, I bought livestock for rearing. All my life I have wished to own livestock but this dream was next to impossible since I was not certain where I was going to get such an amount of money. Give directly has bridged the wide gap between me and my dreams. Besides that, I also paid school fees arrears for my children and went ahead and stocked foodstuff. This has improved my living standards and I am a happy parent.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Having my own piece of land has made my life to be so different. Previously I used to lease from friends whenever it was planting season. This was very expensive and sometimes I could not afford to mean some seasons I could not harvest anything. This issue was really stressing me, seeing my neighbors preparing their farms and after some months harvesting. Due to this, after getting my first transfer the top priority was to buy my own farm. I am now positive that next season I will no longer lease or even struggle. I am also assured of getting sufficient harvests from my farm. I am so thankful to GiveDirectly, may God bless this organization.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember very well it was around 6 am when I was going to the dam to fetch water, then I saw a notification from my mobile phone. When checked it's content it was a Mpesa message from GiveDirectly informing me that they had sent my first transfer. I was overwhelmed by joy because I knew I will achieve my goals.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a piece of land. I have always been longing to own one but they were too expensive. It is now a relief to me because o will no longer lease like before. I also bought some two bulls which will help me in my farming activities. I later bought a few pieces of iron sheets, building poles, this was purposely for the renovation of my house which was almost falling. The remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to build a house worth 20,000 shillings, buy livestock i.e. oxen and 10 goats at 60,000 shillings and start a shop business with a stock worth 20,000. This will improve my financial capacity a great deal.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I leave home early in the morning after breakfast and head out to look for casual work in our nearest town Bamba till evening when I go back to rest making it my most relaxing part of day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I make 10-20 dollars a day from casual work at construction sites to feed, clothe and educate my family. Because the money is so little, I have been unable to save enough capital to start a shop business that I have longed for for quite a while. It has also thwarted my efforts of expanding my house so it can comfortably accommodate my family of 7 people. This has forced my older children to seek shelter at their grandmother's house which poses a security threat.
