How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Having my own dairy cows and goats has made my life to be different in so many ways. First, the cows are now producing milk in large quantities. My children are now enjoying taking milk and they never miss white tea every morning. I have also started a business of supplying milk to friends and neighbors and the local markets. I am glad that this is now my source of income and actually it is doing well. Ever since I got the transfer taking care of my needs has been easy. I am proud to say my living standards have also improved. On the other hand, having goats means a lot to me. Once they reproduce, I will sell their offsprings to the local markets and start a new business of my choice. I am so thankful for this because I could not have achieved the success were it not for the financial support
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly uplifted the living standards of many people in our village. The majority of us now have semi-permanent houses which is a big step in our lives. We had flourished into poverty to the extent of sleeping under trees being the worst situation. The scare of being attacked by wild animals was the main fear. Improving our security is the best gift that GiveDirectly has given us. Secondly, most of us now have livestock such as goats and cows. The majority of the people in my village are proud because we have assets that we can depend on in case of an emergency. On the other hand, I do not see any sector under which GiveDirectly failed us. All went well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets, poles, and nails worth 10,500 KES. This was purposely for the construction of a new house. The previous one was very small hence could not accommodate my whole family. My children had to seek shelter from my neighbors which was challenging because of the security and some insensitive comments from the host. Additionally, I bought two goats at 6000 KES as my potential assets. It has been my desire to rear them but my income was very low. The other step was to settle the hospital bills for my spouse and I worth 3000KES. Both of us were unwell, thanks to GiveDirectly since this money came in handy. I finally paid the Masson 20,000KES and bought foodstuffs.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have my own dairy cows. I have had the desire to keep them in my compound but they were costly. I am now hopeful very soon they start reproducing and they will increase in number. With the cow, I will be getting milk for free. I have been buying from my neighbors at a high cost and sometimes I could not afford it at all. To add to that, I will start selling the milk to my friends and getting some money in return . This will be my major source of income and I believe it will uplift my living standard greatly. I will be able to cater to my family's basic needs without straining as I used to do.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 am when I heard my phone vibrating. Since I am illiterate I asked my daughter-in-law to confirm what the notification was all about. When she checked, she realized it was an mpesa message from GD. They had sent the money they had transfer as they had promised. I was over-excited.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying two dairy cows. I had been longing to own them in my homestead but due to my financial status, I could not afford to purchase them. In addition to that, I bought two mattresses. This is because the previous ones were old and we were always feeling uncomfortable especially my children. The remaining amount of money I bought some household items such as chairs, plastic water tanks, and some foodstuffs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means financial stability to my family. At the moment, my husband borrowed 6 cows from our neighbor with the aim of rearing and get milk for sale to earn us income. He usually sells 5 liters every day at Ksh40 per liter. Despite his much struggle, we sometimes skip our meals because this income is insufficient. My desire has been to own 4 dairy cows once I receive the transfers from GiveDirectly. This will mean more milk and hence, more money since I will be having a reliable source of income. Part of the transfers will help me to buy new beddings to replace the old ones because they no longer give me better sleep.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I spend the better portion of my day doing farm work in the morning and charcoal work in the afternoon. These activities are very tiresome and normally drain much of my energy. It is only in the evening when I get ample time to rest and share meals with my husband. Therefore, I consider evening as the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a stable source of income to sustain the needs of my family is my biggest hardship. At the moment, I depend on my husband who herds my neighbor's cows and in return, he sells the milk to earn us a living. Since his earning is minimal, I opted to do charcoal burning so that I can supplement his income. With our combined income, we still can not fully meet our needs, something that rob my joy in life.
