How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Even though I had numerous plans on receiving the first and the second transfer, I could not accomplish all since the cost of the top priorities was so high. Apart from the construction of new houses, paying school fees for my four children, and buying enough foodstuff for my household, I still had a dairy cow in mind that I could not afford at last. At the moment, I am working on that course even though it might take more time before I realize it.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Of all the organizations that ever worked in my village, GiveDirectly was the best with its approach that reached out to every household. Everyone got a chance to enroll and received an equal amount. It was also a great feeling that we had the freedom to make informed decisions without following a set spending pattern. I am forever grateful to GiveDirectly and wish them the best in the great job they are doing in other villages.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mother currently taking care of seven children - all in various schools. Raising them and ensuring that I provide all they need was not easy. I am grateful that the receipt of the transfers from GiveDirectly was a great boost and an ultimate solution to most of the challenges I had. The second transfer was instrumental in putting up a second house following the construction of a kitchen completed with the first transfer. Buying all the required construction materials and paying the labor charges cost KES 30000. I am happy that my family of eight has a spacious room at the moment. I also spent KES 10000 on school fees for my child in secondary school, and the remaining amount on buying a water tank, utensils, and foodstuff for my household.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at 6.06am when the vibration from my phone woke me up. I called my daughter to check for me and she confirmed that it was my first transfer from Givedirectly. I was super excited and I planned on withdrawing the amount as soon as possible as I could not risk losing the transfer to fraudsters I had been hearing around.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The relief of clearing school fees arrears for my son in secondary school is my biggest daily difference. This gave my son ample time to study without being sent home hence missing a lot in class. I thank God for this and I am hoping to do more with my first transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being a single mother of four, meeting all my family needs had been a struggle since I didn't have an inflow of money. Upon withdrawal of my first transfer, I went and settled school fees arrears of KES 10000 for my son. Due to financial constraints, I couldn't pay it in time. I am happy that he got time to study without being sent home. I also spent KES 24,000 on constructing a two-roomed house since the one I had was leaking during the rainy season. The house is now fully complete and we are enjoying the warmth and adequate space.I bought a skyplast that I use to store 1800 liters of water. With the remaining amount, I bought foodstuff and clothing for my family members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My two sons are pursuing their secondary school education, this has strained me a lot financially in paying their school fees. Above all, I am a widow making me lack a helping hand from my spouse. This is making my life harder now that I am just a mare farmer with no stable income. With this money, I will use KES 50000 to pay school fees for my children and KES 40000 to build an iron sheet house. I am surviving in a single grass-thatched house with a leaking roof. This is bringing me shame especially when it rains. I will use the remaining money to buy food for my family. This helps reduce the acute food shortage that we are experiencing.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My two sons are performing well in school, this makes me feel happy and have the motivation of paying school fees.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Paying school fees for my two children has been my biggest challenge, this makes me struggle financially. With my casual job of weeding farms, I earn KES 200 daily on a lucky day. Sometimes I miss these Jobs and stay idle at home with no income.
