How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am the breadwinner for my family and I do not have a stable source of income. Previously, my daily income from working in peoples farms was always not enough to feed my family but currently, I am able to meet our daily basic needs using my income from dairy project and working for different people. Also, I was able to practice timely cultivation and used hybrid seeds. I am now optimistic of a good harvest that will last us for some time. All this would not have been possible had it not have been for the transfer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well by giving us the financial aid that enabled us to transform our lives and I do not see anything that they did not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
When I received my second transfer, I spent some amount to buy a dairy cow as a way of expanding my dairy keeping project. I settled on buying a cow so that I can be using the income from milk sales to cater for my children's education. Also, I spent some amount to repay the debtors who my spouse had borrowed money from without my consent. My children were also not left behind since I was able to buy for them some decent second hand clothes. I used the remaining amount on farming. I hired a tractor for land preparation purposes And bought some hybrid maize seeds.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I used to buy milk and it was very costly for me because I do not have a source of income, I depend on the casual jobs in the village to get the money for all the basic needs. There was a time I approached our village elder and explained what I was going through and he decided to give me one of his cows with an agreement that he will come for it anytime when I bought mine. I was so happy because he solved part of my problem but my worry was that he might come anytime to take back the cow and my children would suffer again. When I received the money from GiveDirectly the first thing that came into my mind was to buy a dairy cow. Currently, I have enough milk for my family and I sell the surplus at the shopping center to earn an income to meet other basic needs for the family. I no longer get worried because I own a cow. I no longer do much of the casual jobs, I have time to work on my own farm. I am so happy about the support because it has made our lives so amazing.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my money I felt so happy considering that I had never received such an amount of money before. I remember very well it was early in the morning when I received an unusual message on my phone. I was lost for words when I checked the content of the message and found out that I had received a sum of KES 55000. My spouse and children were equally happy and could not keep calm at that moment.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer to buy a dairy cow. Part of it was used to buy food for the family and the remaining amount was used to pay school fees for my son who is in college and renovate a house we are staying in.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that i will be able to initiate dairy farming in my farm since i grow nappier grass which i usually lease out at a cheaper price since i have no cattle to feed them with. I will therefore buy two dairy cattle to support my income as a casual labourer. The remaining part of my transfer will go to paying school fees for my two children in college and one in secondary school
What is the happiest part of your day?
My typical day revolves around waking up as early as 5.30 am to prepare breakfast for my family, after which i head to the forest to fetch forewood which i would latter sell to get some income. I usually spend my afternoons in people's homes doing some casual jobs such as weeding, planting and digging in order to support my financial needs. I am usually happy in the evening after getting back home carrying some food for my family since its also the time i get to rest
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship we have faced in our family started three years ago when my spouse fell terminally ill due to depression, something that has affected his mental health, thus forcing me to struggle alot providing for my family since he can no longer engage in any income generating activity after the illlness completely drained off his energy. Imagine engaging in casual jobs like weeding and digging people's farms in order to get some income which goes to supporting family needs as well as paying school fees for four children, two studying in college and two in secondary school, this has been a great challenge to my family.
